Dining Room Table Help - Decision to buy?
We've been using a Staples folding table in our dining room for the past 6 years. SO its time to get a real table - these are my options:
1) Buy the new table/chairs that I've wanted for the past 5 years b/c they are having a payment plan we can do (although its still a splurge)
2) Take mom's dining table and reupholster chairs (Although don't love chairs)
3) Take mom's dining table and buy new chairs, but then need to match style AND if I do this - can i use those chairs in the kitchen instead? Or is that weird b/c you can tell they were supposed to go together?
Other side related question - if I get my own dining room table - could I use my mom's set as a kitchen table? (we've been using folding chairs and an old table leftover from my aunt's old office in kitchen)
Opinions/thoughts? I can't decide to splurge or be practical and whether to mix and match too.

Re: Dining Room Table Help - Decision to buy?
Since you can afford it with the payment plan, I would get the set you want, even if it's a splurge.
To me, a dining room set is an investment. I use my dining room to entertain and host holidays often, and it's one of the more formal rooms of my house. So, if you are the same, then I think it's worth buying furniture that you really like, since you will presumably have it a long time and use it often!
It doesn't sound like you will be truly happy with your other options, so why settle? I could see taking your mom's set as a temporary solution if you really couldn't afford what you wanted. But if you can, then go for it! Plus, I think taking the table and buying new chairs is going to cost a lot, too, so if you are willing to spend that much money, may as well get the whole set you want.

I'm thrifty. Seeing you have a baby, i wouldn't splurge... unless i could lock my kids away from the table, and the cat... (who finds it great to sit on my table!)
I'd take mom's table, go to homedecorators.com... they have so many options for chairs.
Have tons and tons of holidays until your kids get big... destroy the stuff!!
THEN, invest in the set that you love...

GOod luck!

Splurge, you will have it forever hopefully and you will eventually have to have one anyway

Re: Dining Room Table Help - Decision to buy?
I recently splurged on a dream dining room set and don't regret it at all. I think after living with a folding table for six years, you've earned the right to buy new furniture (assuming it's not going to put a financial strain on you). Of course, I don't know what your mom's table and chairs look like or how well how they would work in your home, so it's hard to really give advice here.
