Dining room set
DH and I are unsure of how much is an appropriate amount to spend on this. I just wanted some feedback from you all to see what the average amount is. I am thinking I want to go traditional for this - china closet and table. Anyone opt for something different? Just curious....

Re: Dining room set
It really depends how much you want to spend and what you are looking for.
Some people have a $2000 budget and work around that. Some people have more money to spend on looking for more "high end" furniture.
If you are looking for all wood cherry furniture, you just need to be ready to spend $$$ for it.

Re: Dining room set
I spent ~5k for dining table & the cabinet hutch.
For me, I spent more than I normally would - but i justified it by knowing I'd keep & cherish it forever.

Re: Dining room set
I would fall into the Other category that isn't listed. Just bought our first dining set for $799 at Bobs! We needed something inexpensive. It's a dining table w/ leaf and 6 chairs. I don't have use or space for a china cabinet or hutch or sideboard right now.

Re: Dining room set
I was going to say between $2K and $4 - really depends on your budget and what you're looking for.

less than $1000. We bought it second hand on craigslist. The owners had the original receipt for $3600. It has 8 chairs and a huge table, no sidepiece or buffet.

i've been thinking about going on craigslist to find a new table set. I've heard of people getting great deals just like yours! Was it a pain to deal with the sellers? Arranging delivery?

No, it was simple. They were really nice, just by chance they lived so close to us which I didn't realize when I first saw the ad. We picked it up with our pickup truck but we could have rented a truck if needed or hired a service that moves furniture.
