Did you ever wonder?
How people try to stay away from the very popular names and cross it off the list that there are less of that name being used. So the way I think of it, if I name my DD one those names, like Ava or Isabella (in top ten of SSA list) then there will be less people naming their baby girl that name this year or next year?

Re: Did you ever wonder?
Yeah- it's all relative.
And name trends come and go, so what's a popular name now will be obscure 10 years from now, etc etc
I just went with what I liked...regardless of if it was used a lot etc

I think that is covered in Freakonomics. This blurb doesn't touch on it, but I think it was in this chapter Freakonomics

Re: Did you ever wonder?
That sounds like a Yogi Beara quote on why he no longer went to Ruggeri's, a St. Louis restaurant: "Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded."....
"Popular" really only matters in your circles. DS has a popular name according to the SSA chart, but we have yet to come across another boy his age named that in 4 years of elem school, several years of soccer, karate, Cub Scouts, etc.
