Did I screw this up?

Ok-- I swear-- I am not an idiot in the kitchen... BUT.. I am trying to make a birthday cake for my mother-- who is my go to cooking question person-- but I can't ask her cause it's a surprise.

I am making a two layer cake-- so I just figured-- buy 2 cake mix boxes... After mixing the second box and pouring it into the second pan, the thought occured to me that maybe one box fills two 9 inch cake pans??

Now I have both pans in the oven-- one box per pan. Am I going to have a monster cake baking in there???

Re: Did I screw this up?

most likely the pans will spill over....too much batter

put a cookie sheet underneath them...on the bottom rack so the spillover doesnt burn on the coils...

thanks-- I just put each pan on their own cookie sheet.. so-- we shall see what happens.

I am really so stupid-- I thought-- two layers, two boxes.

Honestly- my mom usually makes stuff from scratch-- so I am not really used to the mixes. I hope the cake comes out ok-- I really wanted to make something that LOOKED and tasted good.

How much does the cake rise?? I am probably going to have to cut a lot off the top-- to make it straight in order to frost.

I am SOOO angry with myself. Chat Icon

Re: Did I screw this up?

I usually bake from scratch - so I am unsure about the box mix - BUT you may be able to take one (Depending on how much it rises and how deep the pan is) and cut it in half and just use that for your cake - or take them good half of both of the cakes you have in there and use those. I am sure it will be great.

Re: Did I screw this up?

ok-- now I have no idea how long to keep it in there.

It's already been baking for about 35 mins and it's still totally uncooked. Chat Icon

Re: Did I screw this up?

Because you put so much in each pan it will take a lot longer to cook. It may take close to 45-60 mins.

You could always cut each cake in half and make a four layer cake. That would be very impressive!

Good Luck!!

Chat Icon Sorry Randi! Thanks for making me laugh Chat Icon One box = 2 layers.

Let us know how it turns out anyway! If both of the layers come out even, it will just be a really big 2 layer cake. It might still work!

Re: Did I screw this up?

Ok-- one is out- I had to put them on each level of the oven cause I put them each on cookie sheets, so the one on top finished first, although got a little browner than I would have liked.

I think I will be able to cut one in half- and make it as originally intended. The other one, I will just keep in the freezer for a rainy day-- or use without a layer if cutting the other one does not work out.

So, either way-- I will have a birthday cake for my mom!
