did i do the right thing?

I put in for a vacation day so my boss called me in to tell me I took 1 day extra but they will pay me for it anyway (yey!...I didn't realize I was over my limit) ... but then we started talking about having the baby and I basically just told my boss to plan for me not coming back after (I said I wasn't 100% sure but its not fair for me to tell them 1 thing and do another if I really don't know what I want...I told them to plan for the worst)...despite all the advice I'd been given about telling them I AM coming back regardless. I just feel bad...they need to plan for tax season next year and I am in charge of a TON of work. They are so nice and told me I am always welcome here no matter what...and I believe them.

I dont think there is anything wrong with being honest. I'm sure they appreciate that!

i don't think that was wrong considering you are certain that you will not be returning and they don't sound like the "cut throat" spiteful type of place. Its always best to leave on good/friendly terms. You never know, you may want to go back part time when the baby is in nursery school or something... you are lucky you don't need to go back. I am SO praying they'll let me go to part-time (3 days per week) so this way i can coordinate with DH schedule and one of us will always be with baby but i dont know they'll go for it. I may have to do 4x

If you are covered under your DH insurance - it's not a big deal. You have a good relationship with you and that is good.

Just make sure that you don't lose out on at least any maternity pay they give and your NYS STD

I think you did. I know of a few people who didn't plan to go back to work, and informed their employer from the get-go. In the end, the employer came back offering better hours, part time work, or work from home that worked out great for them. SO I say yes, it pays to be honest and leave on good terms. You may want to do some part time or work at home at some point and it is good to know the door is open to you.

thanks ladies...I feel good about it!!! and I don't think I will be losing out on anything by telling them now.

In that situation I think you did. They sound really great at your office. At my old job I would have done the same thing but here at my new job, I dont feel comfortable telling them about post baby.

I think you did the right thing. It gives them more time to prepare.

I think you did the right thing. We all have different situations and need to handle them in our own way.

I would've done that too, but I hate my boss so much. He hates me too (because I won't sleep with him). So, when I announced I was pregnant he was excited I'd leave. I actually said 'Well, don't get all excited because I plan on coming back.' The smile left his face so fast. I don't plan on going back to that particular job at all. But I like to torture him like he's done to me.
