Diane Schuler - drunk & high
Was there really any doubt?
Also, I thought you weren't allowed to profit from a crime?
Schuler Investigator Agrees With Original Crash Findings By Timothy Bolger on September 1st, 2010
An investigator hired by Diane Schuler’s family said he now agrees with the medical examiner’s conclusions that the West Babylon woman was drunk and high when she crashed her SUV and killed eight people on the Taconic State Parkway last summer.
Thomas Ruskin of CMP Group Investigations had previously disputed the toxicology results produced by investigators and blamed actions on a medical condition.
“I think the findings from the medical examiner and the autopsy look to me like they were accurate,” Ruskin told The Journal News. “The evidence seems to indicate that Diane Schuler was drunk and high at the time of the accident.”
Ruskin recently stopped working for the Schuler family he says because they reportedly have decided to sell the story of the crash to HBO.
The collision occurred in the Town of Mount Pleasant, killing Schuler, her daughter, three nieces and three men in another vehicle.

I am glad they admitted it. It's not much, but it must have been difficult for the victims' families to listen to the denials and other possible reasons for the erratic driving.
Since Diane Shuler, the criminal, is dead, I wonder if the not making a profit from a crime law (?) applies. I don't know if it's a law and if it's federal or varies from state to state.

8 people including children are dead in a horrific accident, and that is supposed to be a movie of the week ?
That is absolutely disgusting.

No doubt on my end...
As for profitting from the crime, the surviving Schuler family weren't charged with a crime.
If Diane Schuler came back from the dead & profitted, then I'd say you have a point.

Interesting, I though families as a whole couldn't profit. So if my DH ends up being a serial killer he can't profit off the story but I can?
I can't believe they would consider making a movie about this. Does the husband think she'll be portrayed in a sympathetic way? Does he really want his son to one day be able to see a reenactment of how his sister and cousins died?
I hope the other families go after the HBO $$ and anything else they can get.

Yes that's right. The family can profit - they are the ones involved in the production.
If she were alive & profitted from the production, the family of the victims may be entitled to the money. Son of Sam law
I can't imagine wanting to be involved in it. I don't understand the logic.
I'm not sure what basis the family has to go after HBO for the money. They would have to involve themselves in the production as well, no?

Sorry, I meant the families of the people she hit. I doubt they are part of the HBO production.

So now that he's not working for the family, it's ALL clear to him NOW Something is so wrong about this.

How is that any different from movies like Titanic, Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, Patton, Platoon, etc...
I'm not judging at all. I'm just saying, movies about horrible events is nothing new.

Re: Diane Schuler - drunk & high
Just a thought - the Schuler family may be using the film $$$ to pay back to the victim's family, right? Or legal fees?
Just wondering...I can't picture them using it to go to Aruba, KWIM?

I agree. Remember also that they had a son who survived, but is still suffering from lasting injuries. Perhaps the $$$ will go toward future treatments for him. He is an innocent in all of this as well and would be deserving of the money.

Yes! I forgot about the son. So sad for all involved. I even feel bad for the husband in a way..even though he denied, denied, denied.. my heart goes out to all of them.

You got me thinking about that. I guess I feel different because those movies are about occurances in history, it's hard to put into words. Titanic was made to be a love story. I haven't seen the others (Patton, Saving Private Ryan) because they are not something I like to watch. I did watch Inglorious Basterds though and was horrified at the graphic violence of it.
I feel the way I do because this accident was so horrific and so preventable. How dare this lady be so selfish. If she wanted to get high and drunk, that's her perogative, but when she got behind the wheel of her car - with children on board no less - that's where her selfish act becomes criminal.

I doubt she got that drunk during the ride and he had to have known about his wife's drug and booze habits.

But knowing your wife is drinks a lot & smokes pot is different than watching her get in the car to drive drunk & stoned. How was he to know she would drive? What responsibility does he have? Both moral & legal? Did he see her get in the car?

This is what makes me sad. This little boy is constantly forgotten about. Barely any fundraising has been done for him, if any - only for the Hance sisters. People think Diane's husband played some role in this by "knowing" she had a "problem", but he's still a man grieving the loss of his wife and daughter while trying to stay strong for his surviving son.
He watched his mother, sister, and cousins die in a horrific way. He's going to need money for medical procedures, therapy, college, etc. I'm not saying I'm for the movie, but I don't believe the money will be spent frivolously.

I don't think they are admitting anything. They are selling the story to try and find out what was medically wrong with her to cause her to go crazy and take drugs and drink
They should just show respect for the dead and STOP IT!!!!
ETA: this is what I read on Newsday about the HBO deal.. "Schuler's family insists an unknown medical condition must have caused the crash. Her husband's attorney, Dominic Barbara, of Garden City, arranged a deal with an HBO film company to pay for exhuming the body for an investigative documentary on the case.
Ruskin said he disagreed with involving HBO. "We will have nothing to do with the HBO film," he said."
Did I understand that correctly?
