DH and I talked today...
...and we decided that it's best for me to take disability from work.
My job is a stressful one (I'm a teacher) and it includes a LOT of prep work. The ONLY good thing about my job is that it requires standing and walking all day, which is the only thing that seems to help my sciatica pain. I'm not even sure I can call this sciatica pain, because it just goes so far beyond that.
Some days I wake up and it takes a good 15 minute walk before I feel up to doing anything. For those 15 minutes I can't think, the pain is so bad. And some days, I get out of bed and find that I can't support any weight on my right leg, thanks to the feeling that someone is stabbing me in the butt every time I apply weight.
It's going to be VERY tough financially--my job pays the whole mortgage--but thankfully we own in NC and not in NY, where we would be doomed and not working would not be an option.
I'm going to let my principal know tomorrow. Yes, I probably COULD work, but there would be many days where I couldn't, and I feel that's unfair to my kids.
Thanks for letting me vent.

Does your job offer any disability pay? Sometimes on short or long term disability you can get a percent of pay. Look into that.
I feel for you, i have sciatic pain but nothing like you describe. I can not imagine what you must be going through. I would do everything you can to take care of yourself and hang in there.

Thankfully, when I was hired last August, I opted to pay money out of each paycheck for disability insurance. I only did this because I knew that I had back problems, and if God forbid something were to happen, we'd have at least a percentage of my salary still coming in.
I am thanking my lucky stars that I did that. I'll be speaking to the benefits person tomorrow to see what I need to do to get it started.

A tough decision but probably the best one considering the pain you are in - take care of yourself!

Re: DH and I talked today...
Thanks for your support, everyone. Things are going to be tight around here, but I need to stop trying to be a hero and start finding someone who will help me.
I just can't live like this for 3 more months. I can't believe I've done it for 4 1/2 already, but I am mentally and physically exhausted.

Your first step is making sure your OB or a pain doctor will take you out of work. You have to have a doctor to back up your disability.
I'm glad you have coverage. Hopefully it's decent and thing will be better than you realize.

It sounds like you are making the best decision for all parties involved. You'll be better off in the comforts of your own home, especially on days that you are really down and out.

Re: DH and I talked today...
that's the best thing you could've decided beth i'm glad you're putting your health first and not letting your job consume you...yes, i agree, standing might've helped with the pain, but the bad outweighs the good...plus your kids need someone who will be there 100% and it's not for lack of trying, you've just got other things to concern yourself with...like cooking that little bean best of luck, let us know how your principal takes it!
