clinical depression is being diagnosed with depression by a clinician (ie psychologist, psychiatrist)
people go through boughts of "depression" at times that go away fairly quickly. Clinical depression is the long-term form.
eta: if you think you could be clinically depressed (ie long term feelings of sadness, helplessness that do not abate, lethargy, trouble sleeping) go to a mental health practioner for a screening.

thanks for the info. i'll be looking at the link in a bit.
i'm asking here because: 1. i always get an answer 2. with our recent move, i'm kind of "between" doctors. i need to find one in my area.
and now that i've asked the question, i realize... IF I HAVE TO ASK, i should hurry up and find a dr in my area.
