Delayed cord clamping...

anyone know if hospitals have a mandatory thing where they have to clamp and cut the cord right away? or is it just something they do because they are doctors or whatever....

TIA for any info....

Re: Delayed cord clamping...

Sorry if this is a stupid question- but what would be the alternative?

Re: Delayed cord clamping...

I would think it would be hard to get the baby to the scale, do apgar, put in the warmer, etc. if he/she was still attached to you. The cord isn't THAT long Chat Icon

I wouldn't see why they can't wait 1 minute to do it. According to this article it only needs to be 30-120 seconds! I would talk to your doctor at your next appointment about it!

Yeah, I don't think that the delay in clamping would not have to be a very long one if you were against the idea of immediate clamping. However, for cord blood banking, you mght not have a lot of choice about when this gets done.

Re: Delayed cord clamping...

We had planned to delay clamping but DD had some distress in getting out so that wasn't an option at the time. Cutting it right away is totally not necessary unless the baby is in distress.
Sorry but I don't know the rules about it though. Do you use midwives? I would think they would be more inclined to allow for this.

well, the alternative is to have the baby remained attached to the placenta until the placenta is actually delivered....im doing so much research on this, and the final minuntes of that blood filled with nutrients and stuff is actually phenomenal...studies have shown that the longer the baby remains attached, the more antibodies and all that stuff....

i just hate all the hospital stuff, i guess...apgar and warmer? id rather have my baby get these vital nutrients than do an apgar test, u know?

i was just curious if anyone knew more about hospital procedure...

im going to talk to talk to the dr at my apt this thursday....

Its really up to your doctor most of the time. If you specifically request to delay it, I don't see why they wouldn't.

My homebirth midwife likes to wait until the placenta is delivered before cutting the cord.
