Sorry no pics, but I had a sunken living room and banister in my old place. I wrapped fake evergreen garland and christmas lights around it. I thought it looked nice. We also hung our stockings from it since we didn't have a mantle.

I'll post pics later, but I have lighted garland wrapped around the balusters. I made sure I kept the top railing unobstructed for safety reasons, though.

I have a splanch so it's only 8 steps. I have garland on the side facing out, so that the railing is unobstucted - it is attached with plastic ties and decorated with shatterproof red balls and mini candycanes. Three stocking are hung.
