Decisions decisions

DH and I did a lot of talking this weekend. We also do some research yesterday and read everything the doctor's office gave us. For some reason one sheet the dr office gave us have us a 1/400 chance of miscarriage after a CVS and the pamphlet they have us as well as American pregnancy Association, mayo clinic all say 1/100.

We are not willing to go through with something that has a 1/100 chance. It's to much of a risk. The biggest thing going through my mind is what if we go through with this have all the genetic testing done, find out nothing is wrong and then miscarry ?? I would never be able to get over it

So now our plan is to go to the dr tomorrow and actually speak to the Dr not a genetics counselor and talk about everything and not let them pressure us into it.
We are awaiting the results of the maternit21 test as well.

Once those back then wait another sono to see if fluid has reduced and if there are any soft markers. Then an amnio if that is the case. Risk is still there but it is less.

This is the hardest decision I've ever had to make

Re: Decisions decisions

I know it's so confusing and there are so many thoughts going through you're head.

My advice is to go with your gut. No matter what happens, you are the mommy to that beautiful LO inside your belly and your instinct is always right.

I hope so hard for you guys that everything turns out ok! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I know it is a tough call. I was told 1/100 as well for CVS however, when I spoke to my dr he told me that those odds can also be effected by the place you use.
He said the place use uses is more like 1/400 for CVS and has never had a patient lose a pregnancy after the amino (loss rate i was told was 1/200). He said he believes its because he only recommends 1 speciality clinic to perform these tests and trusts their reputation.

Decisions decisions

I had an amnio done which carries a risk of miscarriage. The more CVS or amnio a Dr does the less the risk. The risks are higher with a Dr that is not as skilled at doing these.

While its a very personal decision this was my thoughts when I was making my decision. The risk of miscarriage was low IMO. I had to weight that with did I need to know what was wrong (if anything). If I did not have the test would I worry for the balance of my pregnancy. The stress of the unknown was going to be too much for me to undure the rest of my pregnancy so I figure the minimal risk was worth the knowing for sure.

There are plenty of girls on here that have had either the CVS or amnio that can give you their thoughts and stories. It might help in the decision to hear what others have gone through.

I do not regret my decision one bit. My sister had the CVS because her NT came back at 1:4. She does not regret her decision. And the girl I work with also had the CVS and she is also happy she did.

GL and you will make the decision that is right for you.

I spoke with my OB's office this morning and they are trying to get the Maternit21 test results by tomorrow morning.
DH and I have decided to wait for the results and then most likely an amnio in 3-4 weeks

The stress is so much to deal with. I love this baby and want it to be ok. It's our first and I never thought it would be like this.

I think waiting on the results of the Maternit21 test is a good idea.

I agree with the AP who said that she couldn't NOT know the whole pregnancy.

I'm not familiar with all the different tests- does the amnio give you as much info as the CVS test?

I'm glad you were able to talk things through with your OB.

Sending you continued prayers Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I agree with this. I did the amnio strictly due to my age, nothing more. I skipped all other diagnostic tests that would only come back with percentage chances. I needed to know 100%.
I didn't regret my decision for a second. I would do it again for every pregnancy I had. (if I planned to have more kids that is).
From what I read, the risk of miscarriage is significantly lower than standard reporting when the amnio is done by a perinatoligist. I had mine done at Madonna by a perinatolgist with sono assistance.
I didn't even have cramping afterwards and the test itself was a breeze. So much easier than I had imagined.
GL with your decision!

@ this point I feel more comfortable waiting for the maternit21 and then proceeding with an amnio. Yes I don't want to go through this whole pregnancy thinking what if so we most likely will be doing the amnio in a few weeks.

I feel bad you are going through this...I think the best thing to do is talk to your doctor and try not to go for an amino

My SIL was given a high risk for Downs and opted for the Amnio. She didn't want to continue with her pregnancy not knowing what/if anything was wrong, so that solidified her choice. My nephew was born perfectly.

Good luck Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
