Death of a neighbor - WWYD

My elderly neighbor next door passed away while my family was out of town.

He lived alone and had two children that live out east and rarely visited. Turns out they cleaned out the house while we were away. They left two couches on the utility strip in front of my house. A small portion of the strip (where the couches are) is part of my neighbor's property.

Because we were out of town, we missed all the comings and goings of his children, the funeral services, etc.

I don't want to be insensitive, but how long do I leave the couches there? From what my other neighbors told me, they've been sitting out there since July 23rd. I have no problem calling special pickup for my town and acting like they are mine, but would you do that? They have been sitting out in the rain, sprinklers hitting them, etc. so I doubt they are anything other than garbage. I don't know if his kids assume our garbage men take couches (which they don't) or they forgot about them. I can stick a note on the front door asking, but it seems like the timeframe to see/speak to his children has come and gone.

What would you do?

Call special pick up... They are obviously not coming back for them and haven't called themselves...

I wouldn't bother contacting the family or leaving a note on the door. I am sure that they have enough going on. Call the town and notify them that you need a special pickup.
