DD hasn't pooped since Thursday night..
I read that this can happen with newborns, although not often with BF babies. She is 27 days ole today...
Should I be concerned??? WWYD??

Re: DD hasn't pooped since Thursday night..
DS also has not pooped since Friday early morning, but he is passing gas & eating. He has also wet about 8 - 12 diapers per day. Supposedly this happens, and only if you reach day 4 there is cause for concern.
I am waiting to hear back from my Ped....
ETA: he does not seem to be in any pain or discomfort, except when he passes gas.

Does she seem uncomfortable? It is unusual for BF babies to be constipated, but very common for them to skip days because they can digest the milk so well!

Re: DD hasn't pooped since Thursday night..
Infant constipation is determined by the consistency not so uch the frequency.
WIth what I have been thru w/ DS, Ped said if it's 4 days or more that's when to "worry".

Also with BF babies, so much of the bm is used by their bodies that they don't have much to get rid of. Molly had times when she didn't poop for a few days. You could also try the theromoter trick.

As a previous poster said, try the thermometer. I also used a warm washcloth on DS's butthole, just massaged it. Also tried pushing his legs up and did bicycle kicks.

same here....he pooped Thur night the last time. The only time he seems uncomfortable is when he has the lower abdominal gas.
I've done the thermometer a couple of times and it comes out clean.
He's passing gas like there is a shortage in town though.....I often wonder if it's him , DH, or one of the dogs!

Re: DD hasn't pooped since Thursday night..
You will know when they are constipated. DD didn't poop for a few days when she was really young and just on breast milk. Now she is constipated today and she is miserable. Her poop is solid and she strains to go. When she wakes from her nap, she is getting prune juice.

I would try some water. Evn an oz will get things moving.
I am a little nervous nelly, so I would call the ped and ask. They should tell you right over the phoen when they think its worrisome or what to try.
I think for BF babies thats unusual.

Thats normal for a BF baby. If you go to a week, I would worry. I wouldn't necessarily try any external methods if he wants to poop, he will poop! BF babies are notorious for that.

Re: DD hasn't pooped since Thursday night..
This happened to my ds. He was pooping fine then just suddenly stopped. After 3 days he started screaming so the dr told us to give him 1/2 a suppository or to just stimulate him with one for instant relief. Well we wound up doing this for about 6 weeks bc he couldn't go on his own. Wound up switching the formula, I didn't bf though. Supposedly its pretty common and stimulating them, I was told is safe to do.
Dr. called it infrequent bowel movements and not constipation bc his poop when he went was soft, not pebbly.
I tried water too, didn't work.

Re: DD hasn't pooped since Thursday night..
I just went to the ped yesterday because of this since I was worrried..she had not gone in two days and was screaming like crazy for two nights with cramps..I felt so helpless..
anyway at first they said try a half of a glycerin suppositories..did that and that only helped a little..same thing happened the following night..so the ped said 1oz prune juice mixed with 1oz of water..WORKED LIKE A CHARM!

Re: DD hasn't pooped since Thursday night..
I was having this same problem with DS and he is only 2 weeks old. My doc said i could use the suppositoris and my mom told me to use the thermometer trick. Well the therm. trick worked like a charm. And oh boy did he go! Watch out when they are backed up b/c it can get crazy. It is common for BF babies to not go for up to 4 days. But I am a worry wort so I call his ped when I need an answer to something.
