DC's reaction to introduction of solids...

My DD is 4 months old and I just introduced her to solids. I offered her oatmeal for the past 3 evenings. I'm not sure if the way she reacted means she is not ready for solids yet. Each time I made a tablespoon of oatmeal cereal. She was able to swallow it fine, but all 3 times she started crying halfway through the bowl and we had to stop. I am not sure if this means she isn't ready and we should wait longer? Or maybe she doesn't like the oatmeal?

4 months is very young to start solids. and it always takes a few tries before they get used to eating.

Dr. said we could start at 4 months. We waited a couple weeks and started at 4.5 months with oatmeal once a day for 3 days. At first, she didn't seem to like it, so we switched to fruits and veggies for a few days. Then tried oatmeal again in the AM. Now she LOVES the oatmeal. It's one of her favorites.

There's no right and wrong. It's all trial and error and should be fun. Maybe try something else and see if you get a different reaction?

But definitely stop as soon as she seems unhappy (like you've been doing). You don't want her to have any negative association to eating.

Or you can wait a couple more weeks and then try again?

If she took it fine and only started cryign part way through I would think she just didn't want anymore.

I never went by a certain amount,....jsut go by their cues.

we didnt start dd on solids to closer to 5 months. at first she would make faces but kept opening her mouth for more.
i would keep dd the oatmeal and stop when she starts to cry - you dont want to force her to eat at that age. if you see shes eating less and less then i would maybe wait some time and try again in a week.

ITA. We started solids at 4 months, and in the beginning DD often only ate 1 or 2 spoonfuls per feeding. It is all so new to them, just give it time and eventually she will accept more.
