Daycare moms - Question about turnover
Is relatively frequent turnover normal in daycare, or do teachers typically stay put for years and years? I am starting to lose patience w/ our center as my sons head teacher, the class assistant, and the teacher he was assigned to have for September, all quit within the last 2 months. It's not a huge center, so every time someone leaves its noticeable. So a replacement has not been found yet for his teacher for September.
The thought of finding a new place for him and transitioning him over is daunting, so I don't know if I am being overly dramatic about something that's just normal. Thanks

Re: Daycare moms - Question about turnover
The center I used did not have a high turn over. Especially with head teachers. The head teacher who took care of my daughter in the infant room had been there for like 19 years- as long as the center was in operation.
Most of the teachers in all rooms were their the entire time DD was there- for almost 6 years.
We came back for the camp there last summer and all the teachers were pretty much the same

Daycare moms - Question about turnover
Turnover is relatively normal since the pay is not good. My son's first 2 teachers were there for over 6 years and then both left because they got better paying jobs.

Re: Daycare moms - Question about turnover
I guess it depends on the place. The daycare/school that my son went to for his before-care program did not have high turnover (always see the same teachers and aides). My DD goes to a licensed in home daycare, there are two co-owners and a few assistants. One of the assistants left but after a few months, came back.
ETA but I would think the reason is because of the pay.

Thanks. Ya know, I had a feeling that was the norm. I am getting the vibe that the owner/director is a PITA to work for and is driving her employees away.

this is probably a good reason why they left. My daycare center have seen so much change and turnover and its definitely because of the old owners and the new owners who came in. I am very unhappy but I am kind of stuck with them. Its my DS last year so I am sucking it up. And I would not recommend them to anyone

I feel similarly, honestly where I live there aren't many options for us. This is one of 2 centers, everything else is an in-home and I am set on being in a center. My son is comfortable where he is and has friends, but the way things are going is really annoying me. Im at the point where im like, put up with it and keep him there since he isn't in any sort of danger or anything.. or make a move.

Re: Daycare moms - Question about turnover
Our daycare does not have a high turnover. The place opened in 93 and the older women have been there since. The younger women have been there a few years.
ETA: But ours is huge. It's daycare, pre-k, charter school, and high school. An odd combination, I know, but I really like it.

Daycare moms - Question about turnover
It depends on place. Apparently my day care had high turnover years ago but since the Directors have been there (the past 2 years), teachers are happier and are staying put. We didn't see any turnover in the year we've been there. From what I can see, the teachers are treated very well and everyone *seems* happy. I would be frustrated if the teachers changed often too.

Daycare moms - Question about turnover
I think it depends. MY DS was int he same center for 5.5 years. The younger teachers there was a high turnover since many were working through school. The older the teacher the longer they were there.

Daycare moms - Question about turnover
I worked in a daycare center a couple of years after I got my master's. They paid $11/hour. I was there 10 months. I could not survive off of that salary.
It really depends on the person. I know people who are looking to move up in daycare (asst director, director), with early childhood degrees, so it's a career for them. Some people go in thinking it's playing with cute kids all day and it's exhausting. And definitely management could be an issue.

Daycare moms - Question about turnover
I wonder if you're at our old center or if there's another center on LI experiencing a mass exodus. I recently pulled DD out because everyone left except the teacher she was moving up to, who was horrible. Apparently the owner was difficult to work for. They all left kind of abruptly but really they would have left soon anyway. Everyone had at least a bachelor's in early childhood ed and many were finishing up their masters. They obviously were not going to work at a daycare long term. I'm still sad over it, months later. I LOVED DD's teachers.
We found a new center. I have no idea what the turnover is. Honestly, I don't know who anyone is other than DD's head teacher so I probably wouldn't even know if anyone left.

Same.
My daycare moves kids every six months until pre-k and my two sons, 27 months apart - only had 2 classes with the same teachers.

Our kids go to the same place.
Definitely not high turnover, from what I've seen so far.

Same with mine. The older teachers have all been there for many years, but the younger teachers are generally students or recent graduates who are looking for full time teaching jobs, so there is usually a higher turnover rate with them.

Re: Daycare moms - Question about turnover
My son's previous daycare just had this. I actually pulled him out because I noticed things that were wrong.

Re: Daycare moms - Question about turnover
Staff turnover was one of my biggest complaints with my daycare. But considering the pidly pay, I couldn't blame the staff.
