Daycare and the holidays..

I was talking to our director yesterday about the gift giving policy. im new to this so i wanted to make sure if we gave $ that the teachers were infact allowed to get gifts.

Director assured me it was fine and that its up to us. she said as a corporation, they are not allowed to decorate or celebrate holidays. then it dawned on me and looked around and there were no holiday decorations.

I thought it was kind of sad that there were no menorahs, trees, santa claus, etc. or even just winter stuff to do a general holiday theme.

I dont know..i feel like with kids around, it would be a happy thing to celebrate holidays. are people really that offended these days by menorahs, trees, santa, etc. ??

my daycare is a single owned facility - they decorate for most holidays and they do crafts pertaining to every holiday including ramadan, quanza, christmas, 4th july, flag day - there is always something holiday related art project it seems

i think it is nice that they decorate and celebrate all holidays - it is good to get an understanding of other cultures even from a young age

this is my thoughts too. I would not care one bit if they were teaching about various holidays and the meaning behind them. (DS is 1, so not like he knows, but in general..) its not like they're going to force the kids to read the bible/torah/koran etc..say prayers, etc.

i wonder if this is how it is with daycares that are corporations..

That stinks Chat Icon

My DD goes to the JCC for daycare, and while we're not Jewish (I like the program there), they do stuff for Jewish holidays which is great! Some of their crafts are holiday related (dreidel and menorah sponge painting, and other things.....it was funny, they made a card that said "shana tora" on the front, and I thought I picked up the wrong card b/c there is a Shana in her class LOL)

Anyways, it would be nice if they even did non denominational things (snowmen, snowflakes, etc)

Re: Daycare and the holidays..

Winter theme here too

Christmas, Ude, Chanukah are the big ones here, with Kwanzaa being less as strong. I had never heard of Ude till now.

I know AJ has a snowman and sort of xmas tree projects, snowflakes and mouses.

It seems that it is not so much an effort to not offend but the idea that each one must be equally celebrated with no one faith being less important than the other, which makes it hard to know EVERY single faith out there so its easier to exclude all then to include all.

SO PC that honestly it makes me sick.

Ours just did a week on Hannukkah--I liked it. DS doesn't celebrate, but I think it's great that he learns about other holidays. They made potato latkes, sang songs, played with Dreidels, etc. It's our first year there, but I'm guessing they will do Christmas too, possibly Kwanzaa.

As a parent, I like that kids learn about many holidays, so the generic winter theme would irk me a little.

DS goes to daycare at a church so everything is Christmas. They even did a Christmas show which was so cute!

DS goes to a small chain daycare and it's decorated for all holidays. He has a dreidel and a gingerbread man right now with his name on it and they are going to continue to "make" more holiday decorations.
