Daycare & Medication
DD is 5 months old and has had some bouts of teething on and off. Nothing too bad- no fever, no sleepless nights, just general fussiness and discomfort during the day. Yesterday daycare told my DH to go and get a doctor's note so they can give her Tylenol during the day for her teeth. I did notice she was cranky on Sunday, but nothing that I felt warranted painkillers. Same with last night- I don't feel she needed them and I didn't give them to her. DH is urging me to just get the note and give it to daycare but I feel uncomfortable. What did you do in this situation? I mean, I plan to talk to my ped. at her next well visit, but how young is too young?

Daycare & Medication
I wouldn't give permission for someone else to give medication and I am as easy going as it gets. I just don't feel comfortable with them giving it. I said no to dd in pre-k and 1st when I got the permission slips home.

My daughters daycare has tylenol (that we supply) that can be used in the event of a fever over 101 temp. They also need my permission via phone before they give it to her each and every time. Last time they called me bc she had a temp and I didn't answer they called every person on my emergency list bc they could not do it without a verbal yes or no even with the dr. note. I really don't think tylenol is the answer to teething at that age. When my daughter was older we gave her motrin when it was really terrible.

I think you can give tylenol at that age; but i personally would not be comfortable with my daycare giving it to her at that age especially for something like teething. You may end up with a teacher that just gives it to her because she is fussy and have no clue if it is in fact related to teething. If you are able to handle her at home without giving meds, I dont see a need to allow daycare to do it

No I would not be comfortable with that at all. Like a PP said, I would worry they would give it every time the baby was fussy and it wasn't really necessary.

Re: Daycare & Medication
I have no problem with having OTC medicines at day care, BUT, I think 5 months is probably too young to give it for teething. I gave/give my children Motrin for teething when they are cutting their teeth - particularly molars. DD has a really rough time cutting teeth and the Motrin helps a lot. But, she's 16 months old, not 5. And I really only give it when she's cutting molars (like right now). I can give it in the morning before day care and it lasts the majority of the day, and i give another dose at night if she needs it.
Day care does have Benedryl for DS in case he gets hives (he has food allergies), as well as an epi-pen, but they've never given the Benedryl, and would call me before they gave a dose.

Are they MAT certified? Do they keep a log that must be signed off in order to administer medication?
If no, I would not. If yes, I'd consider it if you normally give Tylenol for teething.
However I only give Tylenol as a last resort so I personally would not give them permission to give Tylenol for teething purposes.

Re: Daycare & Medication
Thank you all! I was feeling like a crazy paranoid first time mom but I just don't feel comfortable with it. And I definitely don't think it's necessary. She was slightly fussy that evening and then the next day back to her normal easy going self. I think they were way too quick to jump to medication. We've never had to give her anything other than gripe water for gas and that was only twice! Usually a teether or a chilled pacifier and she's fine!

I am very laid back and love my day care (have been there over 3 years now) and I would not give them permission to give Tylenol (without consulting with my first). Definitely not being crazy
