Dave & Busters computers hacked into
NEWSDAY STORY
5,000 customers targeted through their registers.
I can't believe how much this is happening lately.
Seriously makes me reconsider using credit/debit cards anymore.

Re: Dave & Busters computers hacked into
I heard about this on the radio this morning. And the entire hack was done remotely. So scary!

This is one the reason my father only pays cash for things. That and says if he dont got the cash, then not worth buying. Keeps him out of debt..

I don't use credit cards for the same reason.
However, I do use my debit card constantly as payment. I used to feel it was safer then the risk of carrying and losing cash.

Re: Dave & Busters computers hacked into
Please, with the amount of online shopping I do for personal and professioal uses, I'd be dead in the water if I had to go back to cash only.
I try not to do business with companies that have high incidence rates of intrusions like Bank of America. But any large chain or bank is going to be a major target, no getting past that.
I also check my accounts periodically and ensure I recognize all purchases.
Besides that, this is what happens. It may be a big PITA when it happens to you but they're getting better at getting your money back to you asap, I think.

Re: Dave & Busters computers hacked into
this happened to my best friend at a supermarket chain upstate. Charged $5,000 on her debit card....just in time for her to mail out her mortgage bill and other things.

DW and I are strange that way..... Credit cards keep us OUT of debt. If I have cash, I figure "It's mine, no interest on it, etc. I can spend everything I have." With a credit card, I know that if I buy too much, I have to pay interest, and I HATE that, so I buy much less. Plus, with cash, after a buying spree, I have no idea what I bought. With credit, I have an on-line record of everything.
Much easier keeping track of everything with plastic....
Also, no recourse with cash. With credit, you can stop payments, and fight charges. With cash, once it changes hands, you can't get it back.

Some of them retire from black hat hacking to white hat hacking after their jail terms, etc.
Kevin Poulsen, a wizard at social engineering and telephone system/computer/device hacking, is now a senior editor at Wired magazine. I read his book, it's fascinating.
Considering a lot of these guys know how to exploit networks, they can become security officers too.

Re: Dave & Busters computers hacked into
My dad thinks he was actually affected by this. My parents took my brother there for his 17th birthday in August. Around Christmastime, he started getting weird charges from overseas. Could just be coincidental, but it was the same card he used at D&B in August.
The thought of anyone getting a hold of my personal information is so violating to me. It's scary.

From what I understand, using debit cards is more risky than credit cards... withdrawls are harder to fight and get re-imbursed than odd CC charges.....
