Crystal in Urine
I have a quick question for anyone who has had this exp. My ds is 3 days old. He has crystal in his urine. The doc. said it is a sign of the beginning of dehydration...has anyone had this experience??? TIA

Re: Crystal in Urine
YES! They told me that DS needed to take in more fluid and since I was EBF, they tried to push formula. I held my ground and once my milk came in, it was fine. No worries, love! It'll be fine!
ETA: Congrats!!!!!

Re: Crystal in Urine
I didn't but my BFF did!
Just keep nursing...and the more you nurse the quicker your milk will come in..It is probably not in yet! This is what she did and it went away after a day or two!
I agree with PPer they will sometimes push for formula...but if you feed ever 1.5-2 hrs and DO NOT let it go longer - those stinkin' crystals will go away in no time!
Good luck!

Re: Crystal in Urine
both my dd's had that-I chose to supplement with formula, but it is a very early sign of dehydration and you really don't have to. Either way, it's what you are comfortable with.

Re: Crystal in Urine
Yes, this happened the day before my milk came in. I didn't think DD was going at all the day we got home from the hosp, so I had to take her to ped the next morning. She looked at her diaper and told me that the orange-y/yellow color (which I thought was A&D residue) was urate crystals and it means she was a little dry. We suspected that my milk would come in any minute, so she didn't push formula. It did and the crystals went away.

Same experience here. As soon as my milk came in it went away. So disconcerting to see though when you just bring your baby home!

Same here! Except I had a csection so I was in the hosp for 5 days. My milk came in while I was there and DSs dehydration was resolving when we got home. The nurses never push supplementation with formula, just practically around the clock constant nursing!

Re: Crystal in Urine
yes my DS had it when he was 4 days old. He was dehydrated. I didn't choose to supplement right away which was a mistake. He wound up being jaundice. Take your Drs. advice and not those of nurses, other moms, etc since every baby is different. My Dr told me to supplement and I listened to the lactation consultant who said not to.
