Crying when leaving DC at daycare....

So after almost 4 months of being in DC, DD has started crying in the AM when I leave her. It is breaking my heart and leaving me in tears. How long did your DC go through this phase? Anything that I can do to help her get through it?

DD is almost 1 year old. Chat Icon

Re: Crying when leaving DC at daycare....

Totally a phase - DS just went through it after he turned 1. DH drops him (I'm the good guy that gets to pick him up Chat Icon) and he freaked out a few days in a row out of absolutely no where.

Now there are mornings where he'll whine or even cry for a minute but he's fine almost immediately after.

I'd recommend making a quick getaway once you get her interested in her friends or a toy or something. It 'feels' wrong but it's the easiest on everyone.

DS went through a crying stage as well it lasted a couple of weeks. It was hard leaving him crying. The teacher always reassured me he only cried for a few min. Now I have to ask for a kiss goodbye because he just runs off to start his dayChat Icon

This happened to DD right when she turned 1. It went on for about 3 or 4 weeks, and then one day, it magically stopped!

It's definitely a phase. A heartwreching one IMO, but just a phase.

Re: Crying when leaving DC at daycare....

My DS doenst go to DC but my ILs the days I work. Anyway, around 11 months or so he started crying when I left HIM....if he leave me (if my ILS pick him up and take him to their house) he doenst cry.

Now its better I think it took a little time but he realized that I always come back and that when I leave he has fun anyway so its okay.

So glad we aren't the ones going through this. Athan just started doing this for the last 3 weeks or so (he just turned one). When I drop him off at my mom's he will not let go of me so I have to literally go in and leave super fast while my mom tries to distract him. I am glad to hear its just a phase!

I am sending you lots of Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon because I know how hard it is to leave when your child is crying for you. Chat Icon

Re: Crying when leaving DC at daycare....

I am waiting for this to happen - my DS is 13 months and has been going to daycare since 3 months - I am hoping he skips this separation anxiety phase. He hasn't cried yet when I drop him off...that probably doesn't say much about me!

DS isn't in daycare, but I have a babysitter for him, and he has just started doing this (at 15 months). He also did it around 10 months, then that passed.

Whatever you do, don't sneak out of the room cause that can make it worse. Try to stay and get DC interested in something, then tell DC you need to leave, but you will come back for him/her, and you love him, something like that. Keep it short, but reassure DC that you will be back basically, then go.

a phase. DS still does this only when i drop him off though. He was doing it when daddy dropped him off but then he stopped. I hate dropping him off b/c he cries so hard when i leave him. but he usually stops right after i leave which is what his daycare provider says.

Re: Crying when leaving DC at daycare....

My DS only started daycare shortly before a year old and it took a few weeks for him to transition and not cry when I left.

However, at 14-15 months, he was teething VERY badly and had a few colds on and off. I noticed that on the days he wasn't feeling so great, he would cry when I left him. This week, he is back to his healthy, non teething self and has been fine again at drop off.

Re: Crying when leaving DC at daycare....

DD went through this at the beginning of Preschool. We always made sure we left her with her comfort items and reassured her that we would be back. Within a couple of weeks, the crying was a distant memory.
