Cruise with toddlers?
My parents want to book a cruise for June 2010. They want it to be a huge family thing, my siblings with their spouses and kids, my 23 yr. old sister with her boyfriend, I think 20 people in total. Anyway, Joey will be 2 and Grace will be 13 months. Do you think it's crazy to do a cruise with 2 kids that young? Will they even be able to go in the pools since they will both be in diapers? My mom was thinking either Disney or Royal Caribbean. What do you think? TIA!

Re: Cruise with toddlers?
a friend of mine was thinking about a cruise with his DD who is 2 1/2 and the travel agent advised highly against it.
he was told with all the illnesses that are passed around on cruises it was just not worth it.
the travel agent said to wait at least until their DD is 5.
speak to a travel agent or your pediatrician.
most will advise against a cruise at such a young age

Re: Cruise with toddlers?
We leave in a few days on Carnival for our cruise! DD is 2. Carnival is SUPER kid friendly and they have a great camp for the kiddies of all ages ....5ofClubs will tell you ALL about it
We're also going with my family...my sister and her 2 sons 6 and 10.
We decided to leave out of NY so the hassle of flying is eliminated
I don't think you're crazy at all! I think they, and you, would have a GREAT time!

Re: Cruise with toddlers?
We cruised RCCL when DS was 8 months, it was the same deal, my parents and about 20 people from my family. It was fun, but it was a lot of work. RC's kids program doesn't start til 3, so that is something to consider.
I am psyched to hear chelle's Carnival review
As for illnesses, my cousins have cruised pretty much every year since birth and they are healthy as horses AND their grandma is a travel agent!!

LOL I am going to agree and disagree with this. Granted the OP's kids will be older than my DS was, but most nights I was in the room with DS and everyone else was out partying (my arse DH included) one night my parents watched him and DH and I went out.
People thought he was a lot of fun and that he "did so well" but people didn't really help that much

Illnesses? That seems like a very lame excuse.... You are just as exposed to illnesses by going to the supermarket, and possibly more so, since you go more often, and therefore see potentially more people.
We are going on a cruise this year with our 3yo and 6yo. I am not concerned at all about bringing them, especially not because of illnesses.....

Re: Cruise with toddlers?
We love cruises. DD is 2 and we've already been on 2 cruises with her.
We went on Carnival last year when DD was 13 months and it was a 8 day cruise to St. Thomas, Puerto Rico and Tortola. It was great! They had a small toddler/kiddie pool that she went in.
We just got back last week from another carnival cruise with DD. We went to canada. It was only a 4 day cruise but we wished it was longer.
The last day of the cruise as we were leaving DD said "more, more, more" pointing to the big ship. She had an awesome time. A lot to do.
U can get sick anywhere doing everyday things in general. If u fly to go somewhere u are in an enclosed place breathing the same air as a lot of people. A cruise is a great vacation for families, once u step foot on the ship u vcacation already started.
We will be planning our next on very soon!

Re: Cruise with toddlers?
We went on a RCCL cruise when DD1 was 18 months. We went with my MIL, FIL, BIL and FSIL (they got engaged on the cruise )
We did the late sitting for dinner because DD is a night owl anyway. We had an absolute BLAST! At that time Sydney already spoke very well and was always an easy baby/toddler so it was a no brainer for us. RCCL kid program doesnt start until 3y/o but I wouldnt have put her in that alone anyway, nor would I leave her in the in room babysitting which they offered.
We went to whatever shows we wanted and she really enjoyed them, or slept through them lol which was rare!!
We booked early and got the balcony on the bump out. She slept with us so we didnt need the crib. I did think it was silly that we had to pay for a regular 3rd person in the room but whatever, it was worth it.
We cannot WAIT to go next year. This time Sydney will be 3 and Savannah will be 1, that should be interesting!

Re: Cruise with toddlers?
Thanks for the replies!! I think we are going to tell my parents we are in. And to those who mentioned Carnival as being kid friendly, thanks for that info. It seems much cheaper than Disney, so my parents are going to look into that cruise line as well. Chelle, enjoy your cruise!!

AGREED! I also would consider Carnival. I don't think Disney would be the best option considering the whole group.

I disagree, too. Who are the "most" people to whom you are referring?
I've been on several cruises, and each time, I saw infants and toddlers on with their parents. We went on Royal Caribbean each time.

Re: Cruise with toddlers?
I think you would have an AWESOME time!! I would not even think twice if it were me.............I'd be on that ship before you could finish asking me if I want to go!!! We did a huge family cruise like that 2X and it was great. Plus, with all your family there you'll have help with the kids so it will so much fun. And, cruises are very family friendly. Have a blast!

I disagree as well. No different than being in any public place like a mall, like a diner, a theme park, etc. Public places are public places. DH and I plan on taking DD on a cruise loooong before she's ever 5. On the cruises I've been on there have been a ton of kids from babies on.
