Cruise vs guided tour
We were set on a guided tour of Italy next year. But someone told DH that a cruise might be better in the long run.\
I am trying to see the pros and cons to both Can anyone come up with some others?
Cruise: Pros Food included can see more in a shorter time 1 room dont have to move around
Cons: have to pay for each excursion and can run into money.
Tours: Pros All sightseeing included
Cons: Have to live out of a suitcase- always on the move Not all meals are included

Re: Cruise vs guided tour
I love cruises!! I think one of the biggest pros to a cruise is that you can actually relax whereas on a guided tour you'll be on the move, up early, going to bed late, etc. Any chance you could do a guided tour of Italy and stay in one place?

I havent found one like that. I guess each town is too far from one another. We do love cruises and are thinking that might be the way to go for us.

Re: Cruise vs guided tour
i am ding a cruise to Europe this year in June-July. I can not explain the benefits of a cruise as opposed to a guided tour enough! everything is included in a cruise, meals, entertainment and a room to sleep in! yes you have to pay for the excursions, but not all of them are that expensive and you don' thave to do every single excursion. personally, i am not a fan of guided tourts because yes they take you to the more popular things to see, but lets say you wanted to buy something, anything from a trinket to something special for your home, they will only take you to the vendors they already have deals with and in all likelihood, you will get ripped off.

Cruising is the same thing in regards to shopping.
For example, Royal and Celebrity get HUGE kickbacks from Diamonds International; that is why DI is all over their shopping shows and they hand out 'coupons', etc.

Can you tell me which cruise you are doing? I have been looking but I am a little confused.

Re: Cruise vs guided tour
We have cruised Europe twice and loved it for all the reasons you mentioned above.
For the most part, we didn't book tours for the ports of call. We just explored on our own. When we did book tours, we didn't really find any pressure to buy certain items, etc. But, we were also very picky about which tours we booked. We basically toured when it was more convenient for us (ex/farther sight to see or limited time in port).
Where in Italy were you looking to go?
By the way, we highly recommend Holland America!

We want to see Rome, Venice, Florence and I would LOVE to see Bari because that is where my family is from. There is a cruise that does stop in Bari but it doesnt hit the rest of Italy that I want to see.

Never been to Bari, but the other cities were wonderful! Please let me know if you need any tips while planning your trip.
