Cruise question?
Not sure if I should post this here or the travel board...but...
would you say a balcony is a must when traveling w/small kids in the same cabin?
I know it will come in handy when they nap/go to bed We're not sitting in a dark room...can sit out on the balcony etc. But are there any other aspects that make it worth the extra money? I usually go for the cheapest interior cabin since i"m not in the room but to sleep anyway! Thanks!

Cruise question?
I've only ever gotten a room with a balcony on a cruise. It makes it so much less claustrophobic.
When traveling with kids it's great so you and dh can go out there during naps, bedtime, etc.

Cruise question?
We took a balcony on our honeymoon cruise ... it was nice but honestly, not necessary (I'm like you - i would've been just as happy with an interior cheap room and extra $$$ in my pocket)
That said, i think with a baby, it would be A LOT easier with a balcony, unless your child is a really heavy sleeper and will sleep through talking and/or watching tv.

This. Having taken a cruise without a balcony (but still with an outside window), I'd never cruise again without a balcony. It feels more spacious. Plus, I love being able to relax outside in my own private space.

Cruise question?
we are going in 2 weeks on a cruise with 2 kids and got a balcony. I've only ben on 1 cruise before this with a balcony and I feel it's a must. We don't want to be sleeping early but can't leave b/c of the kids. so we can relax, drink, read on the balcony

Pre kid - ehhh we went with the cheapest.
Post kid - Worth every penny!
We even brought my niece with us as our night time sitter so we could enjoy the nightlife on the ship as well. She was worth her weight in gold!

I've done both without child. The inside cabin essentially was fine for DH and I, but I always loved looking out at the water at night when I couldn't sleep. Last cruise we got a window and that was perfect.
Post kid - I would totally get a balcony, send DH to the buffet and get some drinks to just relax at night since we'd have to be with DS anyway.

Like everything, it's benefit vs cost.
Last cruise I went on, seemed like every time kids napped, the sun was scorching in the balcony & it was too hot to sit. We had the shades drawn so kids could sleep. So, balcony was a complete waste. Have has the opposite (too cold) for spring cruises.
Also depends on how many sea days you have. If you have lots of port days, balcony is really irrelevant for those.
Point being: it's nice, but if you have to compromise, may not be a bad thing to do it on.

My DH has said its the only way he will cruise! LOL
There are some things that just make a vacation with kids more enjoyable. IMO a balcony is one of them!
When we went last year, my youngest needed naps, so while he napped for an hour, one of us would sit on the balcony relaxing. When the kids were sleeping we would order room service (wings or something) and some beers and enjoy some adult time. When the cruiseline had fireworks and my youngest was just pooped we watched from the balcony, etc.
We all loved, kids included, waking up in the am and looking out from the balcony. Watching as we docked or pulled away, etc.
That said if it was out of reach financially and would prevent you from going on the cruise, than its worth giving up! LOL

I also want to mention that if you can't afford the balcony, you can still get a room with a window- rather than an "inside" cabin.
To me, inside cabins are a total no go. It is SOOO dark in there with no window. It's like being in a closest.
You can get an outside cabin- without a balcony- as a nice compromise.

We always cruised without a balcony and it hasn't been an issue. Yea the rooms are dark, but it's really good sleep you get lol. My DS when he was younger could nap with the tv on though and actually most of the time he was napping on the beach if we were on an island or at the pool when on the boat.
The balconies are nicer and feel bigger but cost wise we sacrificed the balcony. We hardly stay in our rooms though when we cruise, it's too claustrophobic for me.

We take a lot of cruises. We have sailed in both inside and balcony cabins. I will usually price out both and see if it's it worth it to upgrade to the balcony. My kids are very deep sleepers and are usually up late so when we go back to the cabin we are usually all going to sleep. When they were younger they would nap in stroller so that wasn't an issue. Having the balcony is nice but not necessarily a must for us.

what about doing two joining interior cabins? I priced this for RCL and it was about $1k cheaper to just get a 2nd cabin than upgrading to the full balcony (both interior rooms). If they're joined we could put the kids in 1 cabin and adults in the other keeping the door open in between the rooms during nap/sleep time. An ocean view (just window) was only a little more so would be worth the upgrade but not sure about the full $1k just for the balcony?

We are gong on cruise in Febrary on RCL and getting the royal family Suite.... We are so excited..
We have cruised different times and always have gotten a balcony and especially with kids!
