Creative bakers...need help brainstorming...

I am planning on making a beach theme cake for my DD 1st birthday. It's going to be a beach, with flip flops, and water.

I am not sure how to incorporate "happy 1st Birthday Summer"

I thought to write it in the sand (which will be crushed nilas). But not sure how, unless I slowly pipe darker crushed cookies into the 'sand'?

Then I thought to make a sign, but can't think of something beachy or how I would make one.

Any ideas?

Re: Creative bakers...need help brainstorming...

What about writing it onto a 'surfboard', 'towel', or life preserver ring...something of that sort?

OR- you could sort of...tunnel out the words before you frost/put on the sand so it looks like it was just written in the sand

Re: Creative bakers...need help brainstorming...

Not sure how creative you are going to make the cake but....

Picture walking the path on Fire Island....and you take the walkway to the stairs that lead to the actual beach. You can make a sign, maybe out of fondant and maybe using a edible pen write what you want to say....so it would be like a sign, in the grass dunes, before the beach.

Hope I explained what I was thinking!

Totally not what you are asking but I saw this once and thought it was adorable so maybe you could incorporate the idea somehow

Theres tons of images on google...

Maybe you can write it on one of the flags on top of a mini sandcastle ?

Or write it in icing on the foil bottom or platter you have the cake on?

It's a luau theme,or else LI beach sign would be great!

I do like the idea of making a sand castle and then make a sign on a flag! Chat Icon Hmmmmm I wonder how hard it would be to mold a sand castle.

Or.......

Making a plan with a banner behind it flying over the cake !!

(like you see at the beach Chat Icon )

You could put a rod on either side of the cake and print out "Happy Birthday Summer" on a banner trailing behind a plane using clear fishing line Chat Icon

I love the surfboard idea.

Also seashells (clam shaped) could work. Sand dollars too

The surfboard is cute too, but i am not good with fondant, so I wanted to see options. It can't be too big because the cake is going to only be about 10-12" in diameter.

It can be edible, but doesn't have to be.

Yeah I wanted something a little more original. I'm sure they don't have Summer. I've been keeping my eye out for a little sign that says summer though

They do sell individual letters in the "Happy Birthday Candles" (I have no clue where I saw them but I did) So you can spell out her name...

IF... you want it cut out of Fondant... I will cut it out for you... FM me...

ETA here is a cake I did a while back I have several different fonts I can cut but This is what fondant cut out looks like (I can do it smaller too...)

Oh Chat Icon

Thanks! That was my first bow and everything! I was pretty proud of it... Good Luck! maybe go to a bakery and see if they can just make it for you out of fondant and see how much it would cost... then you can just put it on the cake Chat Icon

Re: Creative bakers...need help brainstorming...

I like the seaweed idea, but I'm afraid trying to write on crushed cookies (for sand) won't stick.

I like the beach ball...that might be cute to write a 1 on.

I was thinking og trying to find a small glass bottle & write a note. So it looks like a message in a bottle

Re: Creative bakers...need help brainstorming...

If you're not comfortable working with fondant, Michael's sell sugar sheets. You could cut the letters out of there. It's thin and stiff and edible and much easier to work with. I think the best and easiest to implement idea would be the beach sign that you can write on with an edible marker.

Love this idea! Maybe "wet" the part of the sand closest to the "water's edge" and that way it will look really good and will be visible.

I think that is what I am going to do.

I am actually doing a ganache coating over the cake, so once it's hard I'll dig out the letters, then cover with the "sand". If it's still hard to read I might use chocolate sprinkles or ice cream crunchy toppings for letters.

I hate when I have a vision, but executing is the problem.....oh the hubby will be happy that I'll have to do a trial Chat Icon

This isn't for the cake but this website has signs that you can print that have flip flops and summer decorations. There is a happy birthday banner and then individual letters that you can print to make any sign you want. Thought it might help you out with your theme!

I am by NO MEANS even close to being a baker but...how about making small cookies with what you want it to say and when the icing is wet put the crushed nilla so it sticks (or maybe a darker graham so it stands out?) and then 'settle' them into the 'sand' so that it looks like it was written in it??
