crashing..formula questions
sorry to crash again..
i just am trying to get a list of things to make sure i have home when these twins come
we will be formula feeding the twins
i know the hospital will give us some but i want to have plenty at home
i do not drive so it makes me nervous to think i would run out and dh is at work(but i have fam and friends i could call in a pinch)
i would like to do powder, basically bc my sisters did and that is what i remember lol
how many cans and how many diff brands would u suggest
i know they might not like a certain one so i thought it could be better to switch it up
also would u suggest getting non powder as well in case they do not like powder?
also..i see many time babies that had gas issues or reflux and moms switched to gentlease(think i spelled that wrong)
does anyone start the baby on that? or is it only if they have issues eating
should i have some just in case
sorry for all the questions,i sound crazy lol i just want to be prepared

Re: crashing..formula questions
Hi, If you have a pediatrician for your twins, you may want to ask what they would start them on.
My DD start on enfamil newborn as per the ped and what the hospital gave. After being home for a few weeks we noticed she seemed like she was straining so I called the ped and they had me switched to enfamil gentlease which what my DS was on and worked for him. but it did not work for her... he then moved us on to soy and then finally switched to similac alimentum....

Re: crashing..formula questions
The hospital gave us similac advance so when I came home, i kept him on that at first. After a few weeks, he was having issues so after speaking with my ped we were advised to switch to gentlease. Its so hard to say what they will like so I honestly would not stock up on any one type. I used the ready to feed in the hospital because thats what they had but I have only used powder since Ive been home and he hasnt noticed either way.

Re: crashing..formula questions
Weas well started off with enfamil newborn nursettes, thanks to the hospital and the reps free cases. I am breastfeeding now, but that is what we started with, and in times of issues, we will use enfamil newborn powder- easier on ds belly. Sign up for similac as well- they send free samples.

Re: crashing..formula questions
I'm the beginning when they are only taking 2oz the ready fill nursetts are great. My dd is on enfamil newborn and doing great on. My oldest was a nightmare and went through 5 formula changes by 4 months until we tried geber good start gentle. So it really depends on the baby. Call similac and enfamil, and gerber tell them you're having twins and would like samples. Have other people you know call or go online and request samples. They will also send you a lot of formula checks which will be helpful!

I don't know anything about formula but add me to the list of friends you can call in a pinch.

Definitely call to request samples as the PP said. They will give you a variety of types to try in case you need to switch. The hospital will give you RTF formula nursettes for when you first go home. If they do ok on the brand you get from the hospital, I would try using the same kind in powdered form to see if they take well to it. I wouldn't switch formula unless one of them has issues, then talk to your PED for ideas. Don't buy a ton at first until you know which brand/type of formula works best for them. GL!

Re: crashing..formula questions
Powder is the most economical way to formula-feed. The nursettes are the most expensive, but are very convenient. They have the same nutritional value, but the nursettes are "ready-to-feed" when you have to add water to the powdered (and some moms use bottled water, boil water, etc. that makes the process longer and/or more expensive too). Some babies get hooked on the nursettes, though (mine didn't) because the consistency is apparently more appealing, and they don't want powdered after that. This is why the formula companies give you all those free samples of the more expensive stuff - they want those babies crying for it!
I wouldn't buy more than a few weeks' worth of formula before your LO gets home. I know A LOT of moms who had to switch brands because their LO didn't do well on one brand and needed to try another.

Don't buy too much cause you might have to switch. I would just sign up for the 3 companies and start with samples. Your dr will give you sames also. I tried 3 different formulas.

Re: crashing..formula questions
i was bf-ing in the beginning and for a bit we thought dd had a milk protein allergy so we tried to supplement with nutramigen. it smells horrible and dd hated it. when we found out she did not have the allergy after all, we then used gentleease and stuck with it. she adjusted well to it and she was a fussy baby before that so i wanted to stay with what worked. i switched to the target brand and she seemed fine with the transition so i use that now- can get a double tub for a fraction of the cost of the enfamils price.

Re: crashing..formula questions
We used Similac Advance since that's what the hospital gave us and we never had to switch. The newborn nursettes are money, but are so convenient for those first few days.
I think we used them for like 2 weeks and then switched to powder. I ordered the nursettes from amazon.

Re: crashing..formula questions
The hospital gave us enfamil newborn nursettes RTF. For some reason my ped said I cannot switch to powder until my DS is 4 months... so I have been using the RTF for now... I agree w the pp to buy a few cases of the nursettes and if you find your twins do well on it then continue on it...
