Police Capture Coyote That Was On The Loose In Central Park
March 22, 2006
The search for the pesky coyote in Central Park has now ended.
Police say the canine was captured at around 79th Street inside the park Wednesday morning.
Police say they set up a dragnet around a fenced section of the park near the Nature Sanctuary, but the coyote broke through, causing a big headache for police and the Parks Department.
"It's proved to be an elusive animal,” said Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe. “Last night it hopped over this fence, as you can see, that's an 8-foot-tall fence. It's also quite adaptable. It came down through Manhattan streets to get here."
The Parks Department says the coyote was first spotted early Sunday morning. They don't know where it came from, but the commissioner said it was probably from Westchester.
A coyote roamed the exact same part of the park in 1999. That coyote was taken down by a tranquilizer dart and now lives at the Queens Zoo.
Commissioner Benepe said this coyote will probably meet a similar fate.
