Coxsackie!

Hello,

so my daughter came home with a letter form daycare on Thursday she may have been exposed to coxsackie and of course friday wakes up with a fever so i take her on saturday and the spots started and she also has an ear infection =(

as i am very upset over this i dont want to overreact when i speak with the director this morning.

i know this happens but my daughter also has enterviros 2 weeks ago and now im questioning how clean they are.

am i over the line in asking how often they disinfect and clean the toys on a regular basis and i was want to know what they plan on doing to make sure the virus is gone from all the toys in the area.

They can clean all they want but young kids are not clean. So they wipe their noses on their arms/sleeves, don't cover for coughs and sneezes etc. We can teach them all we want but they are young so it never happens 100% of the time.

Kids getting sick in daycare is just part of it.....but chances are they won't get as sick as they get older.

This summer my DS was playing with a friends kid on a Sunday and the kid was diagnosed with Coxsackie the next day....my DS never got it. He has had it in his classes each summer and only got it once. He rarely gets colds anymore....when we was young in daycare he had them monthly.

Kids share toys- they put their mouths on EVERYTHING.

They can be the cleanest place in the world but if your child is in daycare they are going to get sick.
There is nothing you or they can do to really stop it.

My daycare center was immaculate- it smelled so clean in there, they were always disinfecting, cleaning rugs, steaming floors- but kids got sick.

Coxsackie is easily spread and it does run rampant in daycares and schools.
In fact I hear kids can get it in public pools- and those are chlorinated! If chlorine can't kill it, there isn't much that cleaning can do

What everyone else said. I doubt this is an issue of facility cleanliness. A daycare facility cannot eliminate the spread of a virus by cleaning toys. Coxsackie, and most virus' are easily spread amongst children. They put their hands in their nose, mouth, pants etc., and touch everything and each other. If your child is in school or daycare they are going to get sick. It sucks, but eventually it will become less frequent as their immune system gets stronger.

As everyone else said... it happens. Could be the cleanest facility and kids will get sick.

DS1 was in daycare since 12 weeks old. When I was pregnant with him and going around to daycares looking I chose the one not only bc I loved the staff, but I loved how much they kept things clean. The director was crazy anal about having things cleaned. They had no carpets except for rugs, which was taken out each night and cleaned. They cleaned and wiped all the toys each day, etc. Well, DS still got everything his first year from RSV, coxsackie, colds, etc

If you feel the facility is not clean then that's totally separate. I know when I'd get those letters about something going around they always added that the toys and rooms will be cleaned more than the usual and everything wiped down and disinfected.

I agree with the rest. DS's daycare moved from a home based into a brand new, clean, gorgeous center in June. He caught a stomach bug the first week they were open. The place can be cleaned but it can't be sterile.

It stinks but, it happens. And it seems to usually happen in waves.

As they get older though - it seems to happen less frequently.

DS 1 got a horrible stomach bug the first week of daycare. And DH and I got it too (and we were diligent about cleaning everything).

So FYI coxsackie is readily transmitted via a sandbox and also a water table/pool. Kids are germy and gross. My dd recently got pink eye and it was over vacation/long weekend so it wasn't from her school. Unless they're in a bubble you can pick up things like this at target or the supermarket. It's so common. Hope your DC feels better soon.
