CourtTV no more

CourtTV is dead. The network has officially rebranded itself as truTV beginning this week and will now focus more on reality programming and less on legalese.

Re: CourtTV no more

It looks like they still will have some court programming - I'm confused by this change.

Change of venue: Court TV redubbed truTV

In truTV, we now have the ideal name that fits both the programming and the target audience. The network will be top of mind for 'real engagers' seeking real-life action programming, real-life emotion and access to places they can't normally go."
Each weekday morning, truTV will continue to feature a six-hour block of trial coverage. Nielsen Media Research measurement will start at 3 p.m. weekdays with the new talker "Star Jones," a live one-hour show. In primetime, early evening and late night, truTV will continue to feature unscripted series that target the "real engagers" demo, it said, including "Speeders," "Forensic Files," "Haunting Evidence" and the upcoming series "Bounty Girls," "The Real Hustle" and "Most Daring."

Re: CourtTV no more

I actually appear on Court TV regularly as an expert guest. Here is the deal that has been in the works for months:

CNN purchased Court TV. CNN owns tons of stations (i.e, Cartoon Network, etc.) so Court TV is just another acquistition. The founder of Court TV really believed in his programming. But now that things have changed, the station's philosophy has changed with it.

So they are slowly getting rid of the live trials. Catherine Crier was fired maybe two or three months ago. Nancy Grace finished her contract and did not resign because she wanted to focus on her other show on Headline News and given that she is pregnant with twins she is kind of busy. Star Jones is starting a new show in August that will air at 3pm. Lots of people are really unhappy with this decision.

The other trial shows (Open Court, Jack Ford) are currently still on. However, this is because Court TV has contracts with stations who carry Court TV. So until the contracts run out, Court TV must continue to provide trial coverage. Once those contracts are over, no one really knows what is going to happen.

The reality is that the ratings for their reality/real life programs are higher than the live trials. However, there is a niche market for trial coverage. People do love it especially down south. I believe that Court TV is keeping their online trial coverage.

It definitely sucks. I love Court TV and I especially love appearing on Court TV. But what are you going to do? My guess is that it will eventually come back.
