Cough Drops

Silly question---are we allowed to use cough drops? Everyone I ask doesnt really know the question to this...I did have someone ask the nurse at work today, and she said no. Just wondering if anyone has heard the answer from their doc.

Re: Cough Drops

My doctor okayed all cough drops but I stuck to mild ones like Ricola and Ludens.

Re: Cough Drops

The only ones I found that don't have the pregnancy warning are Ludens. I had a killer sore throat and I couldn't take halls or chloraseptic. The chloraseptic are classified as a class C drug surprisingly.

Re: Cough Drops

Thanks for the info. I went to the doc today. He said that he doesnt think it is strep, but that my throat is really inflamed and red. I tried life savers, but they hurt my throat more. I am looking for the menthol feel, but I know we cant have thatChat Icon

I thought I had strep too but it wasn't. Mine is pretty much gone now, so hopefully yours will clear up soon too! It felt like I was swallowing razor blades! Ice cream helped Chat Icon

Colds

Many decongestants contain ephedrine, which can raise the blood pressure, so should be avoided in pregnancy. Instead, use a vapour rub or inhale drops that contain decongestant oils like menthol and eucalyptus. Put a few drops in a bowl of steaming water and inhale for 10 minutes to clear your head. (Read more about colds in pregnancy.)

I never heard that you couldnt use menthol cough drops, the amount they use is very low.

My gf who is a dr and just had a baby said I could but I checked with my dr and he said of course you can take them, and to feel better!!! for me I used the sugar free ones and they helped me tremendously.

Are the sugar free ones made with splenda or nutrisweet? I would be careful with that if they are.
