Costco vs. BJ's

We currently have a membership at BJ's which will expire next month and we are considering switching to Costco....which do you prefer and why?

We have a membership to both. We go to each place for different items.

However, if I had to choose, I would stick with BJs. I think they have a larger variety of brands as well as more of a selection of products. I feel the prices are pretty competitive with each other.

We go to Costco mainly because we don't have any BJs near by. My husband (a housewares vendor to Costco) and father (shops at both) both agree Costco has better quality items.

My parents have memberships to both, so BF and I recently did shopping at both to determine which we want to join. We live within 10 minutes of both so either one is convenient to us, so distance was not a factor. We chose based on selection of goods and price.

Hands down we chose Costco. They have comparable prices (Costco being slightly cheaper but BJ's having monthly coupon books) but Costco has a much larger selection of stuff. Their household items are better quality than BJ's too. Especially for food - I found BJ's selection to be kind of skimpy compared to Costco. I know a lot of people say BJ's has more brand names, but I will say that over the past few years I've noticed a significant increase in the number of brand names that Costco carries, so it's quite comparable at this point IMO.

Plus, Costco has the gas discounts. I dont know if BJ's has that too, but the BJ's near us does not.
