Cord blood banking question
Do you girls know if you are going to bank your LO cord blood? If so what made you decide to do it and which facility will you be using? I am still on the fence about this and would like to get your input.

We banked DS cord blood and will probably do the same for DD. If God forbid down the road we needed it for any reason and didn't bank it I would carry tremendous guilt, especially because we are fortunate to be able to afford it at the time. Hopefully we never need it though.
We used ViaCord.

My friend is banking their DD and their reasoning is that the cord blood and tissue can be used for Mom, Dad and Big bro.
I'm considering donating bc there is no history of cancer in my familiy, I'm not sure we can afford to bank, and I read that if you donate it, there is a chance it will still be available if you need it in the future. The only thing that is holding me back is that DH's mom died of leukemia but she was in her 50's and docs dont believe it is genetic. So, I'm still thnking about it.

I was going to--but I had a long talk with my cousin who is a new mom and OB/gyn, she did not bank her DD's cord blood and said that she recommends I public bank it. After speaking with her I am very confident and comfortable with my decision not to bank.

after doing a lot of research and talking to my OB, i will not be privately banking but rather donating to a public bank. see a thread i started on the topic that just got bumped. this article is also helpful

I have done extensive research on the topic and I am comfortable with my decision not to privately bank cord blood.
I discussed this at length with my Ob/Gyn and she noted that there is not enough research or evidence that frozen cord blood is effective 10 years from now.
Also, the chances of your child needing cord blood are 1 in 200,000. And finally, using stem cells and/or cord blood is a "last resort" meaning all other avenues are exhausted before they consider using it. Once they use the cord blood, no other treatment is used.

My sister is banker her DS's cord blood. She is doing it mainly because she has some medical issues herself and wants to be sure she has the blood just in case.
She is using ViaCord.

These are the same reasons why I'm deciding not to bank. Plus, you cannot use that blood for that same child; this I actually just learned recently.
I work in the field of OB/GYN and 3/3 MDs who just recently delivered decided against it. And most OB/GYNs that I ask if they would do it, answer no. Now, is that the reason not to? Because these well educated/experienced people decide against it? No, but it sure helps me feel better about my decision.
Also, it is not recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics to use cord blood as "biological insurance".
This is a very personal decision and you have to be comfortable with what you choose. Good luck

I'm bumping this to tell my story.
DH and I are healthy have no direct family connection to cancer, have a kid who begs for vegetables and veryhe active and he was just diagnosed with non hodgkins lymphoma. They don't know why it happens...there's no genetic, hereditary, or environmental connection.
We caught it before it really got to the bone marrow and he is responding to chemotherapy, however his form of nhl is extremely aggressive and fast. Who knows what another day would have done (tumors double in size in 14 hours). When chemotherapy doesn't work...stem cells are used.
I never thought this would happen...this happens to other people. I just want people to know that it can be used for childhood cancers and childhood cancers are random.

we did for our first child. We had decided then that we would only do it for the first child because it can actually be used for your other children or cousins and my SIL has 2 of her 3 children's cord blood banked. We used Lifeline Cryogenics, they had the best pricing.

My 6 yo is 60 pounds...most kids don't get to 100 pounds until puberty.
Both if our oncologists have said it was great that we had the cord blood. I have a lot of guilt that I didn't bring ds to the er sooner ...I don't want to even imagine the guilt I would have if I hadn't banked since it is usable for treatment for leukemias and lymphomas.

We are banking privately. We were already decided early on in my pregnancy but it was reaffirmed is weekend speaking with a new mom who's daughter was born 2 months ago with hydrocephalus. The baby has already had surgery to insert an internal shunt and is going to Duke Medical Center this week to have a transfusion of the cord blood that was retrieved when she was born just 8 weeks ago. I couldn't not do it for our child, regardless of the cost.

I am so happy that you'll be able to use it for DS! That is awesome!!  
We banked both DDs cord blood with Viacord. The storage fee is $125 per year and the initial banking was around $2000 I believe.
