Cops and tax deducations/write-off's

If you or your SO is a cop, what does your accountant allow you to write-off (such as uniforms, etc.)? Do they claim cell phones for work usage or anything else?

Our NYS return was audited last year and I am not sure if we should go back to the same accountant. He is one that we were recommended to that deals primarily with cops and fireman but I am wondering if that is what got us audited in the first place b/c of all the deductions.

You can FM me if you dont want to answer publicly.

we write off uniforms, dry cleaning, a portion of cell phone since he has to use it all day to call the precient and every time a lipa poll comes down and to call fire depts etc. (but we give the accountant copies of our phone bills) We write off any equipment he buys including his gps, any clothing. Also his trips to the gun range. i can't think of what else.

I save every single reciept for anything we write off though. If I don't have a reciept I don't count it in.

your only allowed a certain percentage based on your income. And I know my accountant said you really don't want to max that out, its sort of a red flag to audit you. (and even though we have a reciept for it all, somethings may not be deamed correct)

Very similar to what we claim.

What kind of clothing? DH no longer wears a uniform at work and buys clothes just for work b/c of the people and environment he works around.

Do you know off hand what is the max. percentage they can claim?

you can write off your cell phone, but technically you can't because it's not a requirement for the job.

DH writes off uniforms, range fees, dry cleaning, ammunition fees (for practice), professional publications, promotional exam prep, equipment purchases...I think thats it.

Its a requirement that the uniforms are maintained and look crisp and neat. My DH also said you can write off trips to the barber shop as well, because thier hair has to be kept short.

I think most of the uniforms are dry clean only.

I know Kenneth's dress blues are.

Just a guess Chat Icon
