Converting to Gas

Has anyone here converted from Oil to Gas? My mom lives in Western Suffolk and is interested but I have no idea what the cost would be or the process. She has so many problems with the Oil not to mention that the prices are INSANE!!!!!!!!!! She pays about $6-$700 for a delivery. It just blows my mind! My gas in home (same style house as hers) is only $117 a month. Granted that I have balanced billing from National Grid but still it's a tremendous difference.

Any advice? Thanks!

Re: Converting to Gas

We are going through the process right now.

THe cost mostly depends on how clos e the gas line is to the house.

We are more than 100feet so we are waiting for a house a few down to get it and then we won't have to pay for the gas line.

We just had a plumber come last night to give us a price so I dont have that yet.

To get the gas line installed we are looking at sometime this summer due to scheduling by National Grid.

Re: Converting to Gas

Thanks, Alli! How did you start the process? Do we just call a local plumber and get an estimate?

I am about to go through the same thing and would love to know if anyone actually had to pay for the conversion and how much it was. We know that our house can convert and we know our neighbors have gas so I don't know if we do have to pay how much it will be. We will be finding out soon, but just wanted to see how much other people have paid for this so I can get an idea.

We are in the middle of it now (in Commack). First contact National Grid to see if there is already a gas line in the street, close to the house. (You have to get an application from National Grid) We were lucky and there was, so then National Grid came and brought the gas line from the street right up to the house with no charge. (It took several months for them to do this, after we submitted our application.) Now we are having Burner King do the rest - get the new burner and set it up and bring the gas line from outside, into the house. The cost for that is about $4500.

I would first call national grid to see how close the house is to the street gas line. It's super expensive if you are more than 100 feet.

Once you know that call plumbers to get prices. Then there is paperwork you and the plumber need to fill out before national grid will schedule the work. We are looking at 16 weeks after we submit paperwork
