Converting to gas?
anyone do it recently?
I'm hearing all kinds of prices.
Last time I investigated it the line was in the street but my house is so far back it would have been ludicrous.
Now it's National grid and my neighbor converted last year..I could tap into her line..no?
What's the criteria and what does it cost?

I looked into it when we first bought our house. National Grid "gives" you 100 feet for free, so odds are if the line goes down your street, you won't have to pay for the line into your house.
After 100 feet it was $65 a foot. This is in addition to the cost of the equipment.

We did this at the end of the summer. They brought the line in free but we aren't far back. The equipment was on special thru national grid for 500 and the plumber did the rest for 4500. So glad we did it.

the first 100 feet are free, and its $72 a foot after that. thats only to bring the gas line to the front of your house, doesnt include a burner etc.
make sure you have someone come measure the distance- according to their computers at national grid, we were told the distance was 170 feet from the closest house; (70 feet x $72 = $5 k just to bring the line over).
well, they were wrong. it was more like 130 feet. this costs more like 2k.
burner depends on various things- size of house, how many bathrooms, # of people; etc

Cool. My neighbor just did this and my estimate is that her house is about 70 ft..but I don't know where the line is.
If I could get this done for 5K that would be a done deal even if I didn't stay in this house long. I think it would be cleaner and better for resale.
I hate negotiating oil contracts every year.
Would I get a tax credit for a new burner?

I am within 100 feet of the gas line. National Grid confirmed this and sent me one of their contractors...
I have to get a high efficiency burner and line the chimney flute. DH also wanted the gas line for the BBQ.
The total estimate for all of it was 13K which sounded astronomically high. I am having another estimate next week. We aren't planning on making the switch til the spring anyway because we are locked into a contract with Petro.

We are in the process right now and it is going to cost around $8k.
ETA: We already ran the gas to the house, so that price doesnt include that.
We got a few quotes, the guy we picked was actuially the most $$ but we liked him and he was local. Burner King was the cheapest but I felt they were too commercial for me.

what about my hot water takn..affected in any way?
My neighbor did it for 8k. Originally she thought it was going to be around 5K.
How much is a new boiler?

The guy I met with did both the plumbing and boiler. I did need to get someone else for the chimney. I think the company was Esposito.
The boiler alone for me was like 10K and then around 3k in labor.
My hot water heater is new so we were electing to keep it since it works fine. You also need to include the mosts for getting rid of the oil burner and capping out the lines.

We just had a company here tonight and we are converting on Monday. Total cost is $3160 ( we already have gas into the house for the appliances).
They are going to take out the oil burner and furnace and install everything new for the gas conversion.
I believe it will be about $722 for the stuff from national grid and then $2900 for them to install and run the lines etc.
Let me know if you want the info for the company. They are based out of Babylon, but I think they go everywhere.
Believe it or not they were recommended to us by our oil company!
ETA: this price includes a new hot water heater as well.

National Grid called me back and they said 9K to bring the line from the street. My neighbor already did this so it shouldn't be. They said they would have to bring the line 225ft! No way. I gave them my neighbor's address and they will call me back after investigating.
