Contractors
I have zero experience with this because the only thing we did in our apt was replace countertops and do a backsplash in the kitchen.
Tomorrow we are going up to the new house and meeting with a couple of people to get estimates for our projects.
How soon do we get estimates? Are they able to give ballparks for materials, etc. also?

Re: Contractors
My contractor gives estimates for each line item. Dollar amount for sheetrock, amount for wood, amount for shingles, amount for plywood. Each electrical outlet and light switch is listed. Labor for each item is separate. (Demo labor is different than framing labor, etc).
Both projects we had with him were almost 100% of what he estimated (at least they would be if I didn't keep upgrading things.... )

Re: Contractors
Most contractors know they are bidding on a job. So they will try to keep the price to the minimum amount. All materials are standard building grade.
When the extras come up, or you have an unforeseen expense, what do you do? You are already working with the contractor so you need to feel comfortable with them from the start.
You do not want a contractor who is going to low ball the price and then bang you for the extras. and their are always extras. I went about 15 percent over my estimate, but it was my choice and I felt he charged a fair price for the extras.
Good Luck, Arthur
