Confused about DS infant/toddler swimwear and swin diapers

Last summer DS was not even crawling yet so I just put him in a swim diaper and in his baby pool.

For this summer and our FL trip I bought him swim trunks but noticed thay have like mesh underwear inside them How do these work with a swim diaper??

What do you put on your 12-24 month DS to go in a pool?

ETA: What are those special diaper-like things that are reusable (i think i saw them in One Step Ahead)?

we use both. A lot of public pools require them to be "double diapered". Thats a swim diaper and that extra mesh one.

Yeah... come to think of it, that mesh part does not really make much sense in bathing suits for little boys who will be in swim diapers. I never thought about it, before. I just put on a swim diaper and pulled DS's bathing suit right over it.

Maybe it's there to keep the boys' junk in for those who choose to go commando?

the swim diapers arent really made to keep everything in and the extra bottom part in the bathing suit is for double protection. We had to buy a swim cover in Saf-T swim bc my DD's bathing suit did not have it. They said a lot suits already have it in.
