Coming back from South NJ via Staten Island
Has anyone gone through Brooklyn on Rt 27 to avoid the Belt Parkway? The Belt really stresses me out and I feel like I get so much anxiety when driving back. I need to find another route!

Re: Coming back from South NJ via Staten Island
My DH used to commute home from Brooklyn daily and when the Belt was bad he took a route through the Rockaways...it had more lights, and was less direct but less traffic and insanity. I can find out exactly the route if you want.

Re: Coming back from South NJ via Staten Island
When I commuted to Brooklyn from Suffolk county I would use an app called Waze.
It provides real-time traffic and reroutes you accordingly. It would bring me a different way everyday commuting.
It was a lifesaver.
It also sent me through the Rockaways. You pay tolls (2 of them), but it was worth the extra miles.

They're talking the Vz. Bridge to the Van Wyck to Rockaway Blvd. through the 5 towns/Lawrence on Rt. 878 to the Atlantic Beach Bridge through Long Beach, then Loop Pkway to Meadowbrook North. It avoids a lot of trouble, but I think it's longer. You just keep moving instead of sitting in traffic.

Re: Coming back from South NJ via Staten Island
This is great. We were stuck in effen SI before sunrise due to construction on our trip down to Disney on Saturday. This was not on the traffic radio either. Really put a damper on the beginning of the trip.
Not looking forward to heading home because I know it will be a nightmare once we hit NY if not before in NJ.

Thanks, I just looked at this on map and it seems very out of the way. How do you get to Van Wyck from VZ Bridge? I'd be afraid to sit in Long Beach traffic also. SS Pkwy is Ok, just looking for any road to avoid the Belt. The Belt is just so narrow and everyone drives like such A-Holes! I get anxious with my 2 kids in the car.

Thats the worst to sit in traffic at the beginning of a long drive! I wish they could build a tunnel or bridge straight to NJ!!

And if they did, it would be horribly backed up for hours and they would always be doing construction on it, yet at the end the road would still be just as shittty as before the so called construction. Ah, New York!

Re: Coming back from South NJ via Staten Island
Yes, but honestly the gowanus/bqe combo can be just as brutal, and you're sitting next to trucks. I hate the belt with a passion but would take belt traffic any day over gowanus/bqe traffic.
It took us nearly 3 hours to get to Staten Island from wantagh last weekend. And my whole family lives in Staten Island.
Eta: sorry, I didn't see you particularly mentioned rte 27. It's a total pia with lights (I used to commute to the 5 towns area from bklyn when I lived there), with all the lights, but it does move. Once you're in far rockaway, you can weave around and hit brower ave, which is not as out of the way as loop pkwy.

True! Thats basically what going through Staten Island feels like....they've been doing construction for years with no end in sight! I think they just keep moving the lanes back & forth and repaving over and over.

If you are coming home from Brooklyn to Long Island, the best way to avoid traffic would be thru the Rockaways...exit 11S on Belt Pkwy to bridge. If your not comfortable with that and you can deal with traffic till just past JFK airport, take the 150 street exit which brings you onto the "service" road of the belt pwky...rides parallel to the belt pwky. If you stay on it, it will eventually turn into Sunrise hwhy that takes you all the way out east...lots of lights. If your on the Southern State and are hopelessly stuck in bumper to bumper traffic, there are a few options...any exit that goes south, like 17S, 19S, 20S will take you to Sunrise Hwy. you can even take 20N Baldwin Rd exit to Jerusalem Ave, make a right and stay on that depending how far you need to go east on Long Island...It will take you from exit 20 on SS to I think exit 30 Broadway. Another way to head east but off the dreaded parking lot known as the southern state. I have worked in the city for years and have many routes. If you decide to take the rockaways next time, its easy...if you have a phone with access to google maps, your good...a monkey could find his way. Hope this helps!

Re: Coming back from South NJ via Staten Island
You can avoid the Belt altogether by taking the NJ Turnpike to the George Washington Bridge.
From Jersey to Long Island my gps sometimes has me go that way.

This is the way we travel to LI and its a much less stressful ride. I would, however, avoid it at all costs on Sunday evenings. Its usually backed up for miles heading into NY when we drive back to NJ.
