Colors for open floor plan

We are renovating our cape and the end result will be a center hall colonial.

Our downstairs will be open - living room to the left - country kitchen and kitchen to the right.

Does the first floor have to be the same color? Where can I transition the colors if not (the stairs will be what is separating the rooms).

I have an open floor plan and at first it was all one color (contractor did it). Too plain for me. I wound up painting an acent wall and the kitchen/dining area. So my downstairs is a total of 3 colors but it flows and I like it.

My house is a totally different floorplan/style because its a townhouse but the floorplan still made it difficult to paint.....you can see the foyer, loft, the kitchen and living-dining room from the front door - add to that my walls have rounded edges (which makes it difficult to do 2 colors on 2 walls because there is no point where they meet its round). If you look in my album you can probably get an idea of the floorplan and how open it is and what I mean when I say rounded edges...

I used a neutral khaki color in the foyer and loft, a warmer and more golden color (not yellow but reads kind of like a yellow tan) in the kitchen and then a greenish gray color in the living-dining room. I wanted cozy colors and I couldn't live with all of my walls being the same color.

I think as long as you pick colors that compliment eachother you'll be okay. You can use the same color and use different shades -for example a very light tan, a medium tan and darker tan...you can do all the same color and then do a few accent walls...

Similar problem here...the front wall of our house goes from the kitchen to living room. Then there's a wall in the living room that goes all the way down the hall. So I feel like either we paint everything the same color, or we end up with an accent wall and I'm not sure if I love that idea.

I have a center hall with the stairs in the middle. But I don't consider it open since they are seperated by the stairs. I have different colors everywhere.

Jenhos - your home is beautiful.

Unfortunately, we have the stairs in the middle but, no walls - it's completely open (maybe I used the wrong term by center hall since there isn't really a hall when you walk in).

Right now - we have our living area/kitchen 2 different colors but, we have a wood header separating the two rooms.

I think I'm going to most likely end up with an accent wall...

All one color - BUT - we have columns separating our DR and kitchen area. You can see it on the right hand side in this picture (there's also one straight across from it). This way we were able to paint our kitchen a diff color....



Bad pic but the rest of the walls are painted a tan color and on the LR wall we had stripes painted as an accent wall...
