coldcuts.... are they safe?
How many of you eat coldcuts while pregnant? I was told by my Dr. It was ok if they were fresh... but many have told me its a no-no! Just curious...

Re: coldcuts.... are they safe?
I don't eat them at all. I heard it okay if they are from a deli with a quick turnout, but I still don't just to be safe. If you were to get sick from the listeria(sp) it is pretty serious.

I eat turkey if it's on a sandwich from the deli. That's really it besides white american cheese.

Re: coldcuts.... are they safe?
I've eaten them. Everything in moderation and if you get them from a reputable place, you will be fine

In moderation yes. My doc also recommended getting the low sodium versions.

Re: coldcuts.... are they safe?
I eat them all the time - maybe 2-3 times a week. I make sure it's fresh and usually nuk the sandwich for 20 secs.

Re: coldcuts.... are they safe?
I have a turkey/swiss sandwich when I am in the mood (maybe one-two times a month)
I had a tuna melt yesterday.
Everything in moderation is fine!

My doctor says cold cuts are on the "avoid" list not the "no" list.

Re: coldcuts.... are they safe?
funny you should ask - i just finished eating an italian hero.
here is my thought process - first of all, i have never gotten sick from cold cuts in my entire life. that's 30+ years of cold cut eating experience
secondly, i have been so sick with morning sickness that i have lost 10 pounds and have been miserable to say the least.
today i was craving an italian hero. in my opinion, the benefit of eating something i'll enjoy and of actually getting some NUTRITION into my body for once far outweighs the risk of getting listeria. so i ate it.
in general, i believe that all foods in moderation are fine.

Re: coldcuts.... are they safe?
I had a hot dog for dinner last night. DH got Boar's Head hot dogs and they were really good.
My doctor didn't tell me not to stop eating anything in particular and since I am still struggling with m/s, I was told to eat what stays down.

Re: coldcuts.... are they safe?
No one told me NOT to eat cold cuts/deli meats when I was PG the first time. I had a turkey sandwich every single day for 9 months. It was one of the few things I could keep down. Me and my child were fine.
Now that I've heard the "risk" I try to eat it less often, but that's more the paranoia talking than anything else.

I was told no salami, bologna
I can eat turkey and ham occasionally, but it must be heated to steaming first.

I don't eat them at all. I heard it okay if they are from a deli with a quick turnout, but I still don't just to be safe. If you were to get sick from the listeria(sp) it is pretty serious.
Actually it has nothing to do with the turnout - the listeria happens before or at time of packing so by the time they get to the deli it is already on it. The good thing about a busy deli is hopefully the cold cuts haven't been sitting around a while and have been properly stored so you don't get food poisoning.
I basically stay away from them and tuna - I have given in about 3 times - but I figure there are plenty of other things to eat I don't really need it.
It isn't just the listeria - keep in mind cold cuts have a lot of sodium and nitrates which aren't great for you if you are pregnant anyway.

I was just going to post the same thing. Reputable deli or scummy deli, they could both have cold cuts with listeria. Even packaged cold cuts at the store can have it.
