Will last about an hour. My two year old has a great attention span, and we can spend an hour easily - - as he also likes to walk up by the church and see the geese.

Yes, we take the kids often. Its little, so you can do it fairly quickly.

Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery...yay or nay
I haven't been there in years, but I loved it as a kid! It's not that big, but a nice way to spend an hour or so.

After going there you can take a stroll into csh village, it's also small and not that much to do either, but it is along the water and there is the natural spring, your dc may get a kick out of sipping water straight from the spring. Get some ice cream or a bite to eat as well.
This way you can extend the trip to maybe 1.5hrs-2hrs.
