Cold Sores in children?
So I have never had a cold sore in my life, and DH says he recalls having one as a child but never again. So I am not sure where DD would have gotten the herpes virus but it's freaking me out.
A few years ago- she was probably in pre K or K, can't recall when, she got what looked like one around her mouth. It healed pretty quickly and that was that. I didn't think much of it after that.
The other day she was complaining of pain and itching on the side of her mouth and within an hour or so out of nowhere this huge sore appeared at the corner of her lips onto her face. To me it doesn't look like a cold sore blister... it's flat and almost looked like the skin was rubbed off in the area- it's like red and raw. Not a blister where it comes to a head or a cluster of blisters.
She complains it hurts. Does this sound like a cold sore? Should we go to the dr?
How would she have gotten it? Like I said I never had a cold sore outbreak, but DH said he thinks he had one as a child. Can he be a carrier and she got it from kissing him or sharing food or drink? But if he is a carrier why have I never caught it from him? I'm so upset - she's so young to have a nasty cold sore!

Cold Sores in children?
I don't know, but my older sister has always gotten them as far back as I can remember. We surely shared drinks, etc. growing up, and none of us got them. There is a medicine you can get that gets rid of them quickly. The name is escaping me though!

Yep - it's Abreva, but that's mostly for when you feel it coming on. It shortens the length of it. I hesitate to put anything on a child just because they might inadvertently eat it off, KWIM?
My DH gets cold sores and I've never gotten them from him. I think we are all carriers in some way and it just depends on if it decides to show itself. When my DH is stressed at work, I can usually expect him to get a cold sore.

If it's a cold sore Abreva definitely helps. They also have RX meds, but I don't find they help any more than Abreva.
Don't freak out. It's really not a big deal!

Thanks. Yeah I guess not. I just always thought cold sores were reserved for when you started kissing people ya know?
I don't expect my 7 year old to have one. And it looks so painful and nasty.

It might not be a cold sore. My son has something in the corner of his lips and the doctor thinks it’s impetigo. I had been putting Abreva on it and it wasn’t improving. Now we’re using Bactroban.

Re: Cold Sores in children?
75% of adults have it... and I remember they say most people catch it as young kids (oral phase esp in daycare). It just doesn’t come out unless you are super stressed or immune compromised. It’s like chicken pox... most of us our age have it living in us because we had it as kids... a few of us who are unlucky get shingles. But it doesn’t mean those who didn’t don’t have it anymore.
It’s hard to tell what it is by your description. You could see a Ped... or just try abreva (it doesn’t work super fast but is better than nothing).
Don’t sweat it! It’s definitely something that you see everywhere once you start looking.

My daughter had this several years ago, but it was all under her nose. I thought it was just crusty from a cold!

I was going to say it might be impetigo as well. I would take her to a doctor because without antibiotic ointment it takes a long time to go away.

Ugh. I will be working from home tomorrow so maybe I'll call for an appt before the holiday weekend. I'd hate to have to go to PM peds over the weekend and expose her to germs. She's never sick. Wonderful.

Re: Cold Sores in children?
OK I just googled it. It looks like what she may have. I kept thinking this did not look like a typical cold sore. Ughhhh. I might see if DH can get her to the dr this afternoon instead maybe.

I would go to the ped to check for impetigo. If it is a cold sore there is a RX cream Denavir that is 10000x better then Abreva
