Cobra question/advice

Our family health insurance is through my husband and he just changed jobs. His coverage ended on 2/28. We have the option for COBRA and it can be up to 60 days retroactive. The new coverage begins 4/1. Would you pay for cobra at this point even though we have had no doctors visits? Should we just wait until the new one takes over? Not sure what would happen if we needed to use the dr/emergency before. Thoughts?

Cobra question/advice

Since you have 60 days to pay, you can ride it out. Fill out the forms, write the check, and have it totally ready to pop on the mail. If you need a doc/emergency visit then just throw it on the mailbox. If not, rip it up.

No. I was in a similar situation and did not do it. My son had a well visit during that time and I just paid out of pocket. COBRA was ridiculous like $1500 a month or something....

Yes, it’s worth it if you break a limb or your appendix bursts or something else that will be more than the payment

I'd be too freaked out not to have insurance. Accidents happen every day.

Re: Cobra question/advice

I thought with COBRA you could just pay for it if/when you need it.
So God forbid you break a limb or burst an appendix as mentoned above, just put the check in the mail like another poster suggested.

If that's how it works, no reason to pay for it now and then not need it.

You have a certain amount of time to elect the coverage (somewhere between 30-60 days I think). After that time period, if you haven't paid, you cannot then choose to pay and have coverage. But, during that 30-60 day time frame, if something happens and you haven't yet paid, you can then pay and the coverage will become effective
