COBRA

I am looking for any infor or experience you can give me on Cobra.

We are going to have a laps in my DH insurance, so will need it for 3 months.

Will his current employer (the one he will be leaving) give him the necessary paperwork?

Is there another company you can recommend using?

How much does it typically cost?

TIA!!!!!

Re: COBRA

Yes - his employer should send him the paperwork to file for COBRA. The cost depends on the coverage... Its is usually very expensive.

Re: COBRA

Assuming the company is required to extend cobra coverage, they will provide a packet of information.

Rates will depend on the prices his company pays for coverage.

Re: COBRA

we had cobra for 3 months during my pg and it cost 1200 a month. during those 3 months I had to stay in the hospital for a week due to my gestational diabetes and no one told us there was a copay with Cobra for hospital stays, find out how much is the copay, we were told 20% so we were hit with a bill from the hospital for 3k!Chat Icon we had to pay it. We never had a copay with our original insurance but was told by the hospital and cobra itself that there is oh well.

no the current employer doesnt give you the forms your old employer does. they should have sent it out asap- like the 2 days after he left. if he didnt get the paperwork he should call them. there is a time frame to fill out paperwork for cobra to become eligible.

I have COBRA. I was allowed to receive it for 18 months after leaving my job. We pay almost $800 a month for it and didn't have any other choice- it's whatever COBRA your company offers you I believe.

WOW, I figured it would be a lot, but not that much!
Maybe DH can ask them now for the paperwork? He only has a few weeks left!

Re: COBRA

I had it when I was too old for insurance under my dad.....$350/month just for me.

The cost depends on the insurance you had, I had Empire, great insurance but very $$$$$$

ETA
That was 4 years ago, and they raised it the 2nd year to $412.

Re: COBRA

DH only gets COBRA if he gets laid off, but not if he voluntarily resigned.

I heard that if something happens you can back purchase Cobra, so the last time I switched jobs I just crossed my fingers and hoped nothing happened.

Even if he is entitled to COBRA then he can't get the paperwork now. The company has 30 days from his last day of work to send it to him, THEN he has 60 days to decide whether or not he wants it. But, if he does elect it, he will be protected as of the day he left the company, retroactively.

If this is confusing, FM me.

Re: COBRA

we were in a lapse for 2 months....we got the paper work and looked at how much it was going to cost for our family and realized that it was cheaper to pay out of pocket for the few visits we were anticipating for the kids and took the chance of having no insurance.

That's for doctor's visits, but what if, god forbid, someone is in an accident and there are hospital bills that could add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

I also think the OP is pregnant, and some doctors won't take a new patient who is pregnant and what if she needs sonos, tests, etc, that is something that insurance should cover.

Yeah, there will be a 3 month laps (month 5,6,7 of being pregnant). While my DH will be working in medicine, I doubt the drs will do tests/sonos for free. And what if I went early
