Cloth diapering BTDT moms

I'm planning on cloth diapering my 2nd baby but I'm at a loss as to what I should get before the baby arrives.

Can you help me out? Is there a starter pack I can buy? Should I buy different brands of covers?

Should I get a toilet sprayer thing now or wait until the baby starts solids?

What about disposable liners? Do you use them right away?

And what kind of container are you storing the dirties?

Thanks!

Re: Cloth diapering BTDT moms

this is what i started with
24 prefolds infant sixe
2 thirsties cover x-small
2 x-small bummis superbrite newborn -the bummis super shiper are not double gussetted so i don't think they are as good
2- x large wet dry bags -(i use these now for day care )- if not going to day care get two x-large wet bag - wait on a pail till you know you like cloth diapering- just hang from hook or door knob
1 - small wet dry bag for diaper bag
2 snappis - a must for prefolds

above is the cheapes way to go

additionally you can buy some all in ones - they come in handy for doctor visits or middle of night changes when you can't see straight
I bought two thristies but they were not that good for us - everyone is different - for the expensive diapers you may like a trial program - i know Jillian's drawers does one- may want to wait tillthey can fit in more

2 -bum genius -one size all in ones - i have bought more as i went because these are great for a belly sleeping boy at night

i would wait on the sprayer and liners until solids - the liners don't help with formula and BM poop it is too runny
the bm poop washes off easiily

i did diapers i think twice a week with the infant stuff - now i have enough to do once a week

let me know if you have any more questions - i went the cheaper route by using mostly prefolds

Re: Cloth diapering BTDT moms

24 unbleached indian prefolds
10 flats
6 cheap ones from babies r us...garbage.

3 xsmall thristies covers
3 small thirsties covers

3 snappis

total...130.00

i did not go infant with prefolds, i fold them over.

no liners
will get sprayer when poop turns solid.

i keep a grocery bag in diaper bag for dirty diapers, then throw that in a ziplock

3 months in 2 days and haven't bought a diaper. no leaks either.

will be selling my xsmall covers and using money towards med size.

this sentence fuels me
"Disposable diapers are the third largest single consumer item in landfills"

i watched No Impact Man, I really believe this is something that a single individual can make a difference with. Add up all the diapers #1 went through. They are just lying somewhere. Your child's diapers, laying in a landfill. I love that #2's diapers are not contributing to this. She is making a difference.

I know Jillian's Drawer has a trial pack that you can purchase. Its a variety of diapers so you can try what works for you. You can return any of the ones you don't like and then purchase what you do like. My best advice as this is what I did was get a dozen prefolds (don't get newborn, get next size up) three covers and a few snappies. Get one or two AIO's (all in ones like bum genious) and one or two pockets. Make sure you bring home a pack of disposables from the hospital. In the first week or two you will know what you like and if you will keep with it. At that time complete your stash so that you won't have to do wash but every third day. I have been using cloth for 14 months. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks ladies for your answers!

Another question -
What detergent would you recommend for an HE front-load washer?

Check out pinstripes & polkadots. They have a chart of detergents.

Also - never got a sprayer. Kept a spatula in the bathroom & scraped off the mush - the rest came off in the wash. (You'll do 2 washes - a cold first for basic cleaning then a hot with a rinse to sterilize.)
