Clomid questions
Are you always monitored when given Clomid or can my OB/GYN just give me a prescription for it? I haven't talked to her about it yet, but was just curious. I'm not under a care of an RE since my insurance won't cover any Infertility issues until I'm here at Duke for 2 years. Not sure about just prescriptions? If I wanted Clomid I'd have to get it from my OB/GYN. Thanks!

Re: Clomid questions
I have heard of Ob's giving scripts for Clomid, but the monitoring is usually non-existent. So you kinda don't know what the results are. But you should ask and see what they say. Good Luck

Re: Clomid questions
some ob's give clomid out like candy and do not monitor your cycle , however, when taking clomid as with any other fertility medication you SHOULD be monitored . You do not know how many follies u will make, if u develop cysts, if ur ovaries enlarge etc.
my ob gave me clomid and told me to call him if i got pregnant the following month i quickly went to a RE and was monitored, given the right dosage each month etc. I know its a pain in butt but if ur ob gives u clomid make sure he/she can monitor u or else switch drs to an OB who will monitor ur cycle.
Good luck

Re: Clomid questions
Thanks!
I was just curious because like I said I don't have fertility coverage, so if I got a script and needed to be monitored I don't know if the insurance would cover it?

Re: Clomid questions
My ob/gyn gave me prescriptions for 3 rounds of clomid, not monitored.
After the 3rd cycle didn't work I called my insurance company and found out that I didn't need a referral for an RE that is also a registered ob/gyn. I called the RE that day and made an appointment.

I'll have to call...
Would you mind looking at this? It's a link to my employer's health benefits page. Do you think Clomid is included in one of the packages? I wasn't sure about Package 1 and Package 4? Is Package 4 just a cycle with Clomid? Thanks!

Re: Clomid questions
Are there any bad things that can happen while using Clomid that would call for being monitored? Thanks!

The monitoring is just to see how your follicles are developing, how many, if you release the eggs or the follicles turn into cysts. That kind of thing.

Re: Clomid questions
My OB/Gyn put me on 50mg of Clomid and did not monitor me. They typically monitor to see how many follicles you are producing, if anything else is going on, how your uteran lining looks, and when you will ovulate (better for timed intercourse).
I would not take Clomid again without being monitored....for me, I had a lot of bleeding and I don't feel like it was helpful at all. I would rather just save the money!
But, if that is your only choice for now, then I guess it can't really hurt.
Good luck!!

It seems like Clomid would be included in package one (along with monitoring)

Re: Clomid questions
my ob/gyn prescribed clomid unmonitored too, and after reading a lot on these boards i went straight to the RE. my ob/gyn didnt even tell me when to come in again after giving me the prescription. just a piece of paper that basically said to take clomid cd5-9 and then Bd every other day starting with cd10...
im Very glad i decided to seek an RE because i found out my LH super high and RE gave me a script to control that too. without that im pretty sure the clomid wouldnt have even mattered cause the egg quality would be crap.
also i dont have any fertility coverage and unfortunately im arguing with the ins. company to pay out for the RE who may be considered a specialist. another good thing about the monitoring though is that if they see you are going to O soon they can trigger that was you KNOW you are def going to O.

I have a good friend who lives out of state, her obgyn not only gave her clomid without monitoring they also gave her the ovidrel shot. So it definitely happens.

Thanks everyone!
I live in NC so I don't know how it's done here? I'm going to try one more cycle (if necessary) before going back to the doctor. Hopefully I won't need to!

Re: Clomid questions
It's not that $$ to pay for Clomid OOP and monitoring (even an IUI).
Clomid is very cheap & you need to be monitored before & at about CD 10ish. That's $400 (assuming a $200 per monitoring visit) per cycle.
It's not cheap.... but it's a hell of a lot less than an injectible cycle.
