Clogged tear duct?

If your lo had a clogged tear duct, what were the symptoms and how did it go away? DD is 5 weeks old and beginning yesterday, every time she wakes up she has a bunch of mucous in her right eye and its watery, and hard for her to open all the way. I am thinking its a clogged tear duct based on what I've googled but just wanted to hear from others that have btdt. Tia!

My son had a clogged tear duct from birth until about 4-6 months? I can't remember exactly. It went away on its own, though I tried to help it along by massaging with a warm damp cloth after baths. Before it went away, his one eye was always weepy, crusty, or mucousy, depending on low long it had been since I wiped it clean. It wasn't hard for him to open his eye all the way, though. If your daughter's eye seems swollen, maybe get it checked out in case it is infected.

My DS had a clogged tear duct when he was around 1-2 months. His ped said to massage it after a bath to help it. His eye would get crusty and gooey. It eventually went away as his tear duct got bigger. My mom said I had the same thing as a baby.

Dd1 had it and it cleared on its own shortly. Dd2 has it now too. Dr said it was clogged/blocked tear duct. I take a cotton ball with warm water and wipe the gook off her eyes. It clears On its own after a short time.

Both my girls had one shortly after birth. We got rid of it pretty quickly with frequent warm wash cloths and I also would massage it with a little breastmilk whenever I fed them.

My first son had to have 2 surgeries to correct this and it's looking like ds 2 will have to have the same :(

My dd's did not go away on its own...after a few months, the pediatric ophthalmologist did a procedure in the office to clear it...it was hard because they had to take her away from me and she was scared, but it lasted a few minutes at most and she wasn't even crying when she returned.

DS2 had a clogged tear duct. As PP's said... massage it with warm washcloth.
Honestly... my mom did research and found out the breast milk can cure it. If you knew my mom this is the last person I'd expect to say that bc she is all about finding a drug to fix it and she never breast fed us.

Anyway, figured I'd try after research. I swear it was fixed the next day. A few drops and massaged in the corner of the eye and it never got clogged again.

Both of my boys had a clogged tear duct from early on. There was a constant discharge and I was always wiping it away. DS1's cleared up just before he turned 1 and DS2's cleared up at 10 or 11 months. I tried drops, massaging the eye, etc, but the only thing that helped was time.

DD had it from 3 weeks to about 4.5 weeks. It just went away with cleaning it with a damp cotton pad and massaging underneath the eye regularly.

My son had that around that age -- I was putting vaseline on him because I saw them do that at the hospital and it clogged his eye. The ped was like no you don't have to put the vaseline on the eyes once you leave the hospital. Whoops. I didn't realize.

So, I did warm compresses - every 45-60 minutes. Starting at the inner part of the eye, near the nose and wiping outward toward the end of the eye --- near the side of the face. So, if you are looking AT your child from left to right. Nose-- outward.

Anyway, that did it. Cleared up pretty quick.

I bought that nice, soft gauze they sell at the drug store - a pack of it, and used a different one, obviously, each time. I also wouldn't wipe twice with the same side -- so, if I used the gauze to wipe, then went to do a second wipe, I would fold it as to not have the same side wipe twice.

Usually each time you do a compress you should do about 3-4 swipes.

Thanks for the advice, Now both eyes seem to have the gunk, I've been massaging the ducts and hope it resolves- it doesn't help that she has a cold and is all mucusy as well!

My daughter had a clogged tear duct too. It started at 1 week old and I think it was gone by 2 months. I did the warm compress/massage a few times a day.
