Classic wardrobe items

I am going to be hitting the outlets at the end of August and I want to make sure I am only spending money on quality pieces that will last a few years. I want to make a list and stick to it!

So far I have:

2 pairs boot-cut jeans
1 pair dark skinny jeans (I already have one light and one dark pair)
2 pairs calf-height boots to wear under jeans- one black, one dark brown (I already have knee-high boots in those colors)

And that's where I draw a blank. I don't work so I don't need suits. I don't wear dresses too often.

What would you add to the list? Assume I have nothing in my closet Chat Icon

A nice blazer! Not necessarily for suits, but I love a good blazer with jeans.

Re: Classic wardrobe items

I assume this is a fall/winter wardrobe -

For me, a black cashmere sweater is a must.
a black pencil skirt
black pumps
a good quality cardigan
crisp button down shirt
a blazer - type wool jacket (a casual jacket to wear with jeans)

I am terrible at shirt/pants/skirt combinations so I actually LOVE dresses b/c they are so easy. - And easy to dress up or down

A wrap dress is always classic and in style.

I stick to clean lines, and shapes that I know look good on my body type - then I add some interest with color.

Re: Classic wardrobe items

Blazer, cashmere sweater(s) - crew or v-neck and a cardigan, white button down, a nice pair of flats like loafers maybe? A pair of black pants and a black pencil skirt.
ETA I'd get a pair of skinny corderoys as well.

Re: Classic wardrobe items

I definitely have to go through my cardigans and sweaters. It's embarrassing - I bought most of my tops in sizes that were way too small for me but since losing over 20 lbs everything actually fits nicely Chat Icon so I am mostly looking to replace my pants and get a good fall coat.

Thanks everyone!

Not sure what's to agree with? I know I'm not 100% up on style Chat Icon but here in Canada I need some boots to wear under boot-cut jeans, is there something else you would suggest?

Love the other suggestions!

I think I'm going to print this out and attack my closet accordingly. I don't have a hanger to spare but most of them are holding old, ill-fitting CRAP.

Re: Classic wardrobe items

What about pocket books? Do you have a black and rich brown bag to use?

Of course there is the classic v neck tee in white and black

Here are some links w/suggestions......

Re: Classic wardrobe items

Yes, forgot a tan trenchcoat, nude pumps for sure (but I think you don't wear heels?). A fleece vest, a couple of high quality long sleeve Ts and thermals, and an LBD

I am going to try to control myself this fall and obviously I have different weather than you, but it does get cold - also I've lost some weight and plan to lose more so I do have a lot of older stuff that will hopefully fit again - but here is the list I've started for myself Chat Icon

1 pair skinny cords
tall black riding boots (I have brown, I'm thinking of the Frye Shirley over the knee ones)
gold ballet flats
1-2 maxi skirts (black and probably a stripe or something)
navy blazer
classic aviator sunglasses
chambray button down plus 1-2 more button downs (longer length to wear with skinny jeans)
1-2 scarves (infinity and regular)

and some kind of loafer to wear with jeans, haven't found what I'm looking for yet

Thanks for the t-shirt reminder, I have black and white but need grey.

I don't use black bags, I much prefer color, but a brown leather bag is on my list Chat Icon

Thanks for the links!

Great list! I need the cords, have the black and brown riding boots, the gold flats, the sunglases, and the chambray button down. Infinity scarves are on my list too!

I love loafers, but I was unsure if I could pull them off or if they were too "old" for me. Chat Icon

LOL I feel the same way (although I AM old so maybe I shouldn't worry about it), that's why I've just sort of been looking but haven't found the right ones yet. I like the look of the Tod's-type loafers but obv not paying $400. More of like a driving shoe I guess, something to wear taking the kids to school or running around or whatever. I don't do sneakers with jeans and sometimes ballet flats aren't enough "coverage" when it's cold, if that makes sense. I also don't really know when I'll be able to wear boots here, I have a feeling there will be some in between weather where its too warm for tall boots and too cold for flip flops lol.

I know exactly what you mean! I love Tod's also, wish they weren't so Chat Icon I'll add them to my list Chat Icon

Re: Classic wardrobe items

I'm going with accessories here since they are the last on my list to buy:

Get 2 nice belts, a black one and a brown one. Having a stylish belt always seems to finish off an outfit. I feel more put together when I'm wearing a cool belt even if I'm just wearing jeans and a tshirt. It makes me feel like I put some thought into my outfit.

And a great fitting nude color bra!
