CIO - weird question
So we've done CIO seriously for two nights now. Last night after DS finally fell asleep, I went in his room and could smell the poo He pooed, but there was no way I was going to wake him to change him. So I waited until 3am when he woke to eat. Gross, I know, but I didn't want to undo what we had done so that he cried for no reason!
Tonight he only cried for 25 minutes (yesterday it was 45), but when I went in to pat him 15 minutes in, I swear I could smell it again. I asked DH what we should do and he said to change him, but when he went in to have a smell (how gross are we?? ) he said he didn't think he had done anything, must've just been gas. So I'm hoping we're okay...
But I'm just wondering if anyone else had this experience? Their baby pooing because of CIO? It's like being in his room and left to cry literally scares the sh!t out of him??

Re: CIO - weird question
Mine didn't poop, but he vomited, so it's possible I would think.
I would change him, it's up to you, but I know the poop can make their behinds pretty irritated if it's there awhile.

Re: CIO - weird question
We didn't do CIO, but I think it's definitely possible for the poo to be a result of extreme crying. DS has pooped after shots, and I think it is because of the crying--when he gets hysterical he flails his arms and legs, and it's kind of even like the bicycling motion they tell you to do when they are constipated to get them to poop.
I don't know how many hours you left the poop, but DS has gotten rashes if it's left more than an hour or so. It's awful waking them up, but it does get really irritated.
On the bright side, we didn't do CIO, but DS the past week seems to have learned how to self soothe! Hope things get better!

Re: CIO - weird question
The first night we did CIO, DS did this also.
When I went in to reassure him, I smelled poop. I just turned on the light low enough to see what I was doing, took him to his changer to change him and then put him RIGHT back into the crib.. No talking, no eye contact, just a simple "Nite nite" when I was done.
Chances are he won't stay a 'night pooper'. It might just be during this whole adjustment period of sleep training.

Re: CIO - weird question
5 months is still kind of young for CIO so I am thinking he is pooping because from crying so hard.

I disagree, I think it depends on the child. We did CIO at 5 months and had a fantastic experience.
Farah, I would change him. He could get a bad diaper rash from being in it for so long. And yes, the crying could be causing him to go... but once you change him, he's most likely not going to go again, and chances are that he'll be so tired that he won't cry for nearly as long.
That's JMO, as I can't recall it happening to us... but since I only used the video monitor, I would have no way of knowing if he ever pooped while doing CIO!
Good luck... CIO is the worst while you're doing it but it's so worth it!!

thanks. He was actually fine last night. Maybe my nose is hyper sensitive??
Anyway, we had a great night. Went down at 9pm, woke briefly around 12:30 but settled himself back in about 10 minutes, woke to feed at 3:30, but went right back down and up for the day at 7:45, happy as a clam!
He hadn't poo'd all day the first day, so I think he just needed to go, it was just a coincidence that it happened during CIO.
