Christening gift... question
DH & I have a christening to go to this wknd for DH's step brother's new daughter. The party is coupled with step brother's wife's SISTER's baby...
We plan to give a generous monetary gift...
We do not want to NOT give a gift to step-SIL's niece since she will be christened at the same time.
Is it tacky if we give 1/2 the amount we are giving to our own niece? Or should we just give the same amount...? We're friendly with SIL's family but aren't as close as we are to step brother & his wife...

Not tacky. My relationship to the person dictates the amount I give. My brother will get more than anyone else. Period.
ETA: Even if they discussed the amt given (which I doubt they would) I think people would expect you to give DH's niece more, kwim? So I don't see how anyone would be offended. But these days....

Not tacky at all! I think if you have to put that many relations in front of it (Step Brother's Wife's Sister's Baby), it is fine to decrease the amount. If your Step Brother's Wife's Sister was a close friend then it wouldn't, but you said they are pretty much just an acquaintance, so it is fine.

its pretty confusing isn't it? And step brother isn't a step brother in the sense that you think. DH's father married his mother about 4 years ago... BUT... we are very close to he & his sister (DH's step sister) I absolutely consider him my BIL.
I adore SIL's family so I want to give SOMETHING...
thanks for the replies!!

it's definitely ok to give your BIL's kid more of a gift. the relationship is closer. i'd actually scratch my head if i was the BIL's SIL (or whoever) and got an equal gift from you.
