Choosing doll characteristics

Just wondering - if you are choosing a doll for dd (assume it's a surprise and dd is not picking her own out), and the line has different dolls, do you

1) choose the doll that most resembles dd (ie, skin, eye, hair color) or

2) choose the doll you like best

I'd make the doll look like DD!

Choosing doll characteristics

I just got the target dolls for my 2 and 4yos. I kind of went with a combination. I tried to pick dolls that resembled them (older one has dark hair and my younger one has blond) so it made sense for them to see themselves in the doll. I compromised on eye color to choose dolls that had accessories they would like and would inspire their imaginations for lots of play (my older one went nuts when she saw the doctor and inventor and my lo is obsessed with her crocs and making smores so there was a doll that was a no brainer for her).

I lucked out in the fact that the historical doll I wanted to give dd looks like her.

Re: Choosing doll characteristics

It's funny. I thought DD would want a doll that looked like her, but she was pointing out all the dolls that were the opposite of her as one's she wanted.
She chose a blonde haired blue eyed doll from the My Generation line at Target.
I would have guessed that totally wrong. I would have gotten her one with dark hair and eyes like her.

I guess it's a toss up if you are surprising her though . Do you know what kind of dolls she generally likes- looks wise?

We have a mix. DD1 seems to like the ones that don't look like her more. Our newest doll looks like DD1, but not DD2, and both love it, probably because it's new.

Re: Choosing doll characteristics

Thanks everyone! So I casually showed dd a photo of the dolls I was thinking of (the wellie wishers) and dd liked one that was neither the one that resembled her nor the one that I liked! Glad I worked it in!

I tried showing DD1 the Wellie Wishers too. I don't think any look like her. I was thinking of buying the red head for Christmas. DD wouldn't pick one - she said I like that one, and that one...to all five of them.
